On Monday, I email every candidate that has an interview scheduled this week. I want to make sure things are good. After each interview, I give an update and make sure they don’t have unanswered questions. If they don’t get the job, I’ll follow up and tell them why and leave the door open for future conversations. It takes a little extra time to create a good candidate experience but it’s worth it. Candidates deserve transparency and honest feedback.

Spread the word, as many companies need to improve their candidate experience. We should be working more in that direction. Candidate experience is not only words on a job description or a way to attract candidates. Actions speak much louder and have a positive impact on employer branding.

The pipeline you’d be building for yourself could be tenfold itself. As I reflect on this I think of how many missed opportunities I’ve had when I was a principal hiring by not doing this. This message is for all the recruiters out there. Understand that you are not just filling up a particular position in your company. You are dealing with the expectations of hundreds of aspiring candidates. So, it is your duty to be responsible and empathetic towards them. When you open a position, you expect people to apply and complete the assignment at the earliest. But don’t you think there are a few actions that you also need to take during this recruitment process? Your end goal is to find the right fit at the lowest possible price point. And you try your best to do that. But, what about the other hundred that you reject? You should share proper feedback to the candidates instead of ghosting them. If you expect a candidate to revert with a completed assignment within 48 hours, you should give yourself the same time to revert to them with a detailed feedback, which would be actually helpful to them.
