Enjoy :) 10-days challenge 📖 Day 7: Simultaneous spatiotemporal transcriptomics and microscopy of Bacillus subtilis swarm development reveal cooperation across generations (November 2023) If you think that all cells of a #Bacillus subtilis #colony growing on an agar plate are the same, you are wrong. According to Jeckel et al., during colony growth, patterns of bacterial subpopulations emerge. Highly motile cells expressing genes for the uptake of the medium carbon source are located close to the circular expanding front line, while #biofilm regulators that rely mainly on core metabolic pathways for energy are found in the dense core. During the growth of the colony, the motile swarming cells excrete metabolites that are consumed by the non-motile later generations. The expression of genes related to mobility, sporulation, osmoregulation and many other processes changes also in time and space. The present work of Jeckel et al. sets the stage for understanding and modelling the #spatiotemporal development of #microbial communities.
