I’ve just made my first stock investment, guided by our cutting-edge work at Gordion! Our Machine Learning platform, which typically helps pharma companies evaluate drug targets and identify likely responders, has an interesting unforeseen benefit: it can predict the outcomes of existing clinical trials. By training on trials with known outcomes, we’ve noticed a clear pattern - successful trials have dramatically high cohort-specific drug target essentiality, while failed ones do not. One standout example is trial NCT06005974, initiated for MEK inhibitor - congratulations Recursion. Inspired by these results, I decided to “put my money where my mouth is” and invest based on our technology predictions. Over the coming months, we’ll be collecting data from the outcomes of these predictions - the closest we can get to bringing our program to the clinic. Nature Biotechnology’s recent article “DNA writing technologies moving toward synthetic genomes” by Caroline Seydel, provides a great overview on the #syntheticDNA commercial landscape, along with previewing advancements and regulations on the horizon. Industry needs are moving toward ever-increasing DNA length. Improvements in DNA synthesis, assembly and purification – as well as cell-free cloning methods–are pushing length, accuracy, purity, scalability and speed to new levels. Matthew Hill, ELEGEN founder and CEO, sees the failure of the build phase in the design-build-test-learn cycle as the bottleneck that is hindering #syntheticbiology advances. Most synthesis technologies produce relatively short fragments–so the real time sink in the build phase is assembly & cloning in the quest for longer, more complex, sequence-perfect DNA.
