Space, the great frontier! This isn't a SpaceX tribute post, though that would likely rate much higher in the algorithm. Nay, this is a post about space as a premium in manufacturing and how different people work to solve it. So maybe it's no quite as exciting about exploring the unknown universe, but close hopefully? Material handling is a massive logistical cog in the wheel of manufacturing, but I would argue it doesn't get as much attention as it deserves. You might just take it for granted that if that's where the stuff I need is, I just go get it when I need it and come back, right? How long did it take? How often do you have to do that? Moving items from a shared central (or isolated in some cases) location to line side storage may solve problems you didn't know existed! For now, we are making incremental strides in improving line side storage where it makes sense. I am really interested in how everyone else handles things. Do you have to manually load and unload equipment? (Call CTI Systems!) Do you have dry cabinets that you store parts long term? Do you have a smart storage system (like Inovaxe Corporation) that makes it quick to find what you need and reduces or eliminates the possibility of a worker grabbing the wrong part? Do you have a mobile storage system? (check out the crazy solutions they are developing at PROMATION USA) Do you have a dedicated employee or department that handles stock replenishment? Do you keep parts line side, or in a separate location? If you could set up your factory floor however you wanted, what would that look like? Please share your ideas and solutions for material handling and storage! And because it's been forever and I've been letting down the 4 followers of my #badatAI tag, I included a picture of our factory floor as depicted by a certain language modeler.
