Hi everyone, from now on, every Friday, I will share my thoughts on the fintech news that grabbed my attention during the week   💵 SumUp raised a $307M funding round. But wait, “wE thOUgHt  FinTEcH Is dEaD”… Well, not really. SumUp, a competitor to Jack Dorsey’s Square that provides payment processing and more to about 4M SMEs, raised a mega round from Sixth Street Growth, Fin Capital, and Liquidity Group. The company has had positive EBITDA since Q4’22, and its topline grew 30% YoY   💳 UK payments watchdog (PSR) proposes a cap on interchange fees. The regulator proposes an initial time-limited cap of 0.2% for UK-European Economic Area (EEA) consumer debit transactions and 0.3% for consumer credit transactions, where the transactions are made online at UK businesses because they think UK businesses are paying too high interchange fees. Honestly, this looks unfair, as many UK fintechs built plenty of revenue streams based on interchange. As Simon Taylor wrote in his post, for pre-IPO companies like Monzo and Revolut, that’s a hit and, overall, feels like a step back   🔁 The US Congress overturned the CFPB SME rule for SME lending. For the industry, it looks like a win over the bureaucratic mechanism as the rule in question required even more transparency in the already heavily regulated sector. Small business lending is growing, and the delinquency rate is low, so everyone is happy   🔎 Google adds BNPL to its payment options. WHAT?! BNPL? The same BNPL that was declared “over” one year ago? Yes, BNPL is back. It's actually so back it's not even funny. Google is partnering with Zip and Affirm to pilot BNPL on Google Pay, which looks like a copy-paste from Apple but is still a cool move for the BNPL and the fintech industry as a whole

Research conducted in partnership with Boston Consulting Group finds that 59% of SMBs in Australia are interested in financial services embedded within a platform. Revolut’s cofounder and CEO Nik Storonsky is preparing to turn part of his multibillion-dollar paper wealth into cold hard cash as part of the U.K. fintech’s upcoming secondary share sale. According to the Financial Times, the banking app is working on a $500 million share sale that will see existing shareholders, including employees, realize some of their gains at an expected valuation of over $40 billion. That price tag would make Revolut by far Europe’s most valuable private company, although the final size of the sale and valuation are still in flux.
