What have I learnt as a 'Sales Executive Trainee' in Nestle India in the past few months ❓ Note 😀 : 🔹I had an opportunity to work in the 'Hyderabad market' for almost two weeks. 🔹My 'headquarter' is based in 'Tirupati' as of now. My Learnings 🧐 : ✅ The market in a 'metro city' is very different than a 'tier 3 city'. 🔠 ✅ The 'target set' in a metro city is huge (a big challenge) but in a 'tier 3' city even though the target set is comparatively small but 'placement of products' in an outlet (shop) is very challenging. 🎯 ✅ A 'vast range of products' are to be placed in a metro city but in a tier 3 city, you can't experiment with all the products because the 'per capita income' is low and people are not willing to experiment a lot. 🎚️ ✅ The 'way of convincing' an outlet to place a product is different in both the areas because the 'consumer behaviour' is different - people in a metro city can think of fulfillment of both their 'needs' and 'wants' but in a tier 3 city, meeting the 'needs' itself is a big challenge for most of the people. 👥 #nestle #nestleindia #consumerbehaviour #marketstudy Nestlé Nestle India Suresh Narayanan Bharath Mandhyan Kanishkaa Rajan Mahendra Bharathi Ishita Saxena

"I don't want to do sales, I want to do marketing." The number of students that say this at the UG/Pre-MBA level is super high. If you're one of them, here are a few facts for a few: 🚀There is no "Marketing" post-MBA Only two top companies (L'Oréal & Procter & Gamble) bring Brand management roles to B-Schools (there may be a few other coming to a select few campuses). The rest (Unilever, Nestlé, Reckitt, Dabur India Limited, ITC Limited, Mondelēz International, Tata Consumer Products, etc.) typically bring in a "sales & marketing" management trainee role - which means at least 2 years of sales. The foundation of these programs lie in a 'sales-first' approach. Post your trainee period, the first role assigned to you is "Area Sales Manager". 🚀What is "Sales"? When you think of sales, the mind leads us to various places that may seem daunting or negative (especially if you're an introvert). However, more than anything it's a very clear application of actual management in a control area. You will be responsible for a particular region (usually a tier-2 city at first). The sales figures there, the strategies being used, people management, promotions/marketing within that area - all that happens within your region. Yes you will travel, do on-ground work, and get your hands dirty. The reason why most companies want you to do that first is that it gives you experiences that: A. You cannot get anywhere else. B. Will shape your mind and approach in a way that would make you a more informed marketer/brand manager. 🚀Key Points Sales experience is always valued on your CV as you become an indispensable cog for that area. Most FMCG companies will have that as an unsaid requirement if you plan to switch later. Your respect within any firm is enhanced if you bring in sales experience - at the end of the day that's what's bringing in the revenue. As I complete a year at Pernod Ricard India, here are my key takeaways from work- 1. There’s no end to learning, and in an industry like AlcoBev, every morning you realise there’s a new development 2. Get your basics straight, did I get it, well as much as I can, but like I said there’s no end to it 3. Prioritise being organised, no matter how much Notion or an excel sheet helps, having a diary is a massive saviour, make notes of random things that pop into your mind, put up your learnings so you can reflect upon them later, go back to them time and again, it really helps 4. Network, meet people, initiate conversations, ask questions- there should be no end to that, do not get an answer, find someone ask to clear your doubts 5. Make mistakes, and learn from them 6. Interact with people who are working at the ground level, they have so much to share, their insights are really helpful 7. Take feedback. Have a feedback mechanism with your reporting manager, once in a while take a deep dive into things you did right or wrong 8. Love what you do, if you don’t, you know what’s the next step 9. Have mentors at work, to guide you at every step of work, appreciate your bests, help you learn through your bad days. 10. Have fun, go places, and make your parents proud #workanniversary

I don't know why it's called the city of "Dreams" and not the city of "Pav". Yes, you read it right—I'm talking about Mumbai. I can never understand Mumbaikars and their love for pav in everything. 😂 Even my day used to start with it. Yes, vada pav! Running to the early gate meeting with a vada pav in my hand was my routine because if I didn't rush, I wouldn't catch the train on time. Every morning at 9 AM, I’d attend the gate meeting, where I'd meet my team lead, manager, sometimes the distributor, and the MGR who I'd accompany on the field daily. These meetings, lasting about an hour, were our strategic planning sessions. We'd discuss the week’s to-do list, ways to increase CB, GR, and MTU growth. Don’t worry if you’re confused by these terms; I was too on my first day! 😂 Essentially, our mission was to boost the availability of our products in every E&D outlet, convenience store, retail shop, and paan shop. For the first two weeks, I worked with an MGR who had just completed her training. Together, we visited each retailer to promote the benefits of using the Coke Buddy app, which was my project. After that, I was assigned to different MGRs in various areas, eventually spending the last two weeks with a low-performing MGR. I’m thrilled to share that I helped him increase his performance by 17%—a mini milestone that I’m proud of! 🎉 Our routine involved visiting 25-30 outlets a day, from morning till around 4-5 PM. Along the way, I collected countless stories from the MGRs about their struggles, experiences, and all the juicy gossip.
