Our biggest mistake in the startup journey: We are at 100+ customers & forgot to hire a customer success manager! Customer Success as a function has always been the closest to my heart. I kept doing it myself till I now realize that I am not able to give it enough time. I love talking to my customers & helping them wherever our product or service falls short. But, we are now setting up a team of ninjas who have insane customer empathy and are willing to go above & beyond for customers to derive the most out of our service. Unfortunately, most people think customer success is about: - listening to the complaints of unhappy customers - try to get their clients to renew or expand - anchor weekly calls While these are small parts of the role, but the best customer success is about helping customers unlock the max value out of a product or a service. A customer success manager is able to understand the exact limitations of the product & know exactly where it would fall short of a particular customer. If you do this well, all other metrics follow. I am hiring the first 4 customer success managers for Gush. This is a high ownership role & you will be working closely with the founding team. What comes to your mind first when you come across job titles as “Support Engineer” or “Customer Support”? 🔵 Someone from Swiggy calling you tell that your order is delayed. ⚫ or you call the customer care for an issue and they end the call saying “Aap is call ko kitna star deke rate karna chahoge?” (Hindi) ”Indha sevai-kku neenga evalo star kuduka virumbureenga?” (Tamil) No! I am not demeaning any job, but the point I am trying to make here is - oftentimes we relate this job title with support to a customer care exec in a call centre. Absolutely no relevance to a Product Specialist role in B2B SAAS! In this role at Rocketlane, You would do a 100 things, I would highlight a few which you won’t do - ❌ You won’t be on a 24x7 callings support. We do not have support lines on Calls at the moment (and even if it comes in future, we are never gonna be call heavy) ❌ You do not have random rotating shifts. ❌ You will not be stuck to this role forever. The gradual growth path is this role transitions to Onboarding Specialist or CSM or PreSales. Or literally any role in the company. Everyone you would meet in the Post Sales team has done some form of support role. This is the most closest role to learn the product the quickest way possibly. So here’s something I've observed over the past few years. Our Customer Support team has been a great career launchpad for a lot of people at Xplor and it helped them move into bigger roles when they were ready for it. And it makes sense. The team isn't just the heartbeat of Xplor but their role is central to our mission of helping people and businesses succeed. People in our Support team gain a deep understanding of our products and customers.
