Picture this: A Doctor treats from 20 to 40 patients per shift at a hospital. Patients, whiling to understand their current status, struggle with the information overload, demanding repeated explanations. They need clarity and reassurance. Unable to communicate updates themselves, these patients rely on the doctor to update their family. Families, often fractured and with complex dynamics, split into "sides" so Doctor has to explain at least 2 more times. Same questions. Same anxiety. Time ticks between patients and families. And the communication problem does not end here: Nurses, the backbone of patient care, feel also the pressure with the same amount of patients. What happens when they see changes in vitals or symptoms? Two options: leave it written for the Doctor to see it when they see it, or, go around the hospital-maze to find them and deliver critical updates personally. Its a race against time. Its the definition of burnout. And the scenario is pretty similar when it comes to at-home care. My conclusion so far? We need an entire re-do in how we communicate in #healthcare. Streamlined and efficient solutions are overdue to keep up with the pace of care. And im sure this is just the tip of the iceberg. Is there someone out there already working to fix this poignant issues? #ValueBasedCare #CareCoordination

Today is a good Monday. We have 18 open spots out of 24 for patients to be seen today. As we continue to improve I wanted to share our latest progress here as we work to improve how we provide primary care to our patients. For those of you who have been following along our team has made a significant and concerted effort to improve our access and the experience of care for our patients. We currently serve over 2000 patients and families in our practice and over the last 6 week cycle we have made a concerted effort to make our office more easy to access, a calmer workplace for our employees and a place where we effectively team together. What did we do? - install a doorbell for patient check ins to limit interruptions for our secretary - work as a team to triage all patient concerns rather than delegate this to a single team member - emphasize that prebooked appointments are for care that can only be received in person (well baby visits, chronic disease, antenatal visits) - work to optimize all visits before they are seen in clinic: this means lab work or imaging done before we see patients in some cases to ensure we can optimize our time in person - instill the principle of acknowledging receipt of requests vs feeling pressure to complete them the moment they are received - emphasizing to our team that their time and health is critical to our success and that being calm is more important than having an inbox at zero. - we have opened nearly every day to be fully accessible by online booking and patients are able to book as it works for them. Do I anticipate some hiccups into the future - it's likely. Are we now in a better mental space to work through them and develop solutions to problems - absolutely. #primarycare #calmcare #slowproductivity OntarioMD Ontario Health | Santé Ontario Catherine Faulds Kimberly Moran Middlesex London Ontario Health Team A shout out to some of the leaders who have helped me see the way through this too: Jason Fried David Heinemeier Hansson Cal Newport
