You miss 100% of the shots you don't take! This is one of the key things I have been learnt in my recruitment career. It can be very easy when recruiting to fixate on only contacting candidates who look perfect for the role on paper, or not contact a candidate because you don't think the role would be for them. However doing this is closing many doors before they have even been opened! In the Aerospace industry there are lot of people who only favour contracting work. Therefore when I have a permanent role, it could be very easy for me to not contact a candidate who's CV has the last 20's years as a contractor because they 'wouldn't be interested'. I have learnt to still pick up the phone and ask the question because it could be that you called them just as they have decided they now want to move over to a permanent role. And even if they are not, you have now connected with a great candidate who may be interested in a future contracting role with yourself! Take every opportunity you can to speak to candidates, there is no harm in it and plenty that could turn into great success!

Hiring is a competition. If you want the best people on your team, you have to be willing to pay the price. When someone is interviewing with your company, know that they are more than likely talking with your competitors as well. You need to adapt to this market if you’re still trying to grow and hire people. It’s not what it was 10 years ago, 5 years ago, or even last year. Need another week to decide if you want to make an offer or not? Too late, your competitors are going to hire them first. Trying to save some money by lowballing a candidate by $10k? Better luck next time, your competitors are going to pay them more than they’re asking for. Can’t provide a Project Engineer a work truck or vehicle allowance? I hope you can figure out a way because your competitors sure are. Gone are the days of picking and choosing who you want on your team and having the upper hand in negotiations with potential employees. They say to build Relationships in Recruitment.. the break-ups hit home the same sort of way. 💔 Imagine learning the business inside out, have a good relationship with different department managers and have been honoured a ‘Trusted pass’ to visit whenever. Imagine recruiting 34 permanent members of staff into there since October 2021. Ranging from a £13p/h workshop hand, to an £80k Project Manager… Then comes along a change of personnel, adamant on using their own agency - who funnily enough are charging a whopping 25% fee! (Nearly double mine)… brown envelope comes to mind 🤫 I have now been pushed aside and forgotten, and this process will have to be resumed again.
