On 6/12/24, Applied Composites Los Alamitos, with the collective effort of nearly everyone within the company, successfully delivered the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Outer Barrel Assembly. The primary structure, built as two separate assemblies due to height constraints, will be assembled soon at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. This is the largest optical structure that Applied Composites has ever built. The development effort and flight build spanned over 3.5 years. All composite components were fabricated and assembled in-house, a testament to our team's capabilities and dedication. From the NASA website: “Named after NASA’s first chief astronomer, the ‘mother of the Hubble Space Telescope,’ the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope will have a field of view at least 100 times larger than Hubble's, potentially measuring light from a billion galaxies in its lifetime. This observatory will also be able to block starlight to directly see exoplanets and planet-forming disks, complete a statistical census of planetary systems in our galaxy, and settle essential questions in the areas of dark energy, exoplanets, and infrared astrophysics.”
