5 things I wish I knew sooner in my career: 1. Self-advocacy is a key ingredient to success Speak up, ask for that promotion/raise - don't just assume due process will apply. Let your manager know your plans and ambitions, and plan together. (If they do not plan with you, take that as a warning sign) 2. Start setting boundaries early Whether it's not sharing personal information, or not responding to non-urgent emails after hours - decide your non-negotiables, and stick to your guns. Having boundaries should not impede on your value and contribution to the company. 3. Trust your gut, especially when it comes to red flags Your intuition is your guide. Trust yourself enough in making career decisions, don't accept the pressure to conform as a reason to bow to something your gut screams is a no. 4. Do not limit yourself to the concept of a "dream job" A job or career can be fulfilling in so many ways that you may think. Whether it's the people you meet, the challenges you face which expand your abilities and capabilities, is itself the "dream". My own career is not linear, and I wouldn't have had it any other way. In a way, you can make each role a dream role if you put your heart into it. 5. Track your wins (important!!) Get into a disciplined cadence with yourself to track all your successes, positive feedback and impact. Whether this is 15 minutes weekly, 1 hour monthly or whatever you think is sufficient to remember with enough detail. This comes in handy at appraisals, or even future interviews. This can be as simple as an Excel or as fancy as a Notion notebook - whatever you find is easiest to capture your wins on an easy-to-view sheet. Because here's the reality: Your bosses don't do this for you, so you need to do it for yourself. Not aligning your activities with the career season you’re in creates avoidable problems. This, too, can make a positive difference in your career. 😫 Don't Wait to Be Told Most leaders love to see their people take initiative-especially when that initiative is aimed at furthering the team's advancement towards achievement of the organisations vision for the future. Accordingly, it's wise not to wait to be told to do something that you know will eventually be assigned to you to do. Instead, just do it! You'll make an impression and be labeled as a self-starter capable of taking on more responsibility. 🗺️ Find a Mentor A good mentor can serve as a "jungle guide" for you as you navigate the corporate landscape. Seek out the counsel of someone that you respect and may want to emulate, they'll likely appreciate the opportunity to help. 🤩 Help Others Don't get the reputation of being a cut-throat! You will not advance. "Surround yourself with only people who are going to lift you higher." — Oprah Winfrey In the journey of our careers, there are times when we feel lost or need guidance—whether it’s navigating a job change, making a career transition, or overcoming a professional challenge. During these phases, having mentors or trusted connections to turn to is invaluable. These individuals might not necessarily be your direct supervisors. They could be former bosses, industry peers, seasoned professionals, or friends whose advice you value. Leaning on and learning from people around you can help you guide your future. Those people, ultimately, can be part of your personal board of directors. You just need to learn how to find them and engage and interact with them. If you focus solely on your current job without investing time and effort to maintain these connections, you might find yourself without support when you need it most. Like companies maintain a board of advisors, consider building and nurturing your own personal board of advisors. Take time to connect with and appreciate these individuals regularly. This network will provide invaluable support, guidance, and opportunities throughout your career. Recently, I faced a challenging transition that left me feeling disoriented and unsure of my next steps. It was my personal board that helped me get back on track. As I sit and enjoy the rains this Friday morning, I sincerely thank my board for being who you are to me. A big thank you!
