What Are You Waiting For? If you've been following Rural Policy Partners, you know that waiting is not the style here. But have you ever been stuck in a waiting game, whether for a person or something? The longer the wait, the easier it becomes to walk away. This is a challenge often faced in the behavioral healthcare system – extended wait times when it comes to accessing services and decision fatigue from policymakers that hinder progress regarding the current challenges being faced. Recently, Mental Health America shared their 2022 Access to Care data, and the numbers show this reality. In the realm of "access to mental health care," Iowa stands 18th in the nation. But let's pause – despite this access, a staggering 44% of those in need of mental healthcare didn't receive it. Even more concerning, 33% of Iowa adults grappling with mental illness couldn't access the treatment they required at all. Not to mention, the most recent report from SAMHSA rings an alarming bell: a whopping 94% of individuals aged 12 or older with a substance use disorder remained untreated. So here's the pivotal question: What are we waiting for? In our communities, workplaces, schools, and families, the impact of mounting anxiety, depression, substance use, and tragically, suicide rates, is felt by all. So why are we standing by idle?
