Hilton Foods, a leading international multi-protein processor, has produced their first #crustacean welfare policy, recognizing crustaceans as sentient beings and addressing their welfare during farming, transport, and slaughter. 🦀🌍 🤝The policy, created with Aquatic Life Institute, commits to: 🚫Eliminating eye-stalk ablation by 2026 in UK supply chains 🦀Ensuring 100% stunning before slaughter 🌱Exploring environmental enrichments and ensuring appropriate stocking densities on farms ✅Purchasing from certified farms The policy has already gained media attention in The Fish Site, IntraFish Media, PerishableNews.com and FISH FOCUS, highlighting the growing interest in aquatic #animalwelfare. Major progress has been made on the California Oppose Cruelty to Octopuses (OCTO) Act, a groundbreaking bill that will ban octopus farming and the sales of farmed octopus in California. Yesterday, the bill achieved a major milestone, passing the Senate with a unanimous 36-0 vote. The final step will be for Governor Newsom to sign it into law. Back in April, Tessa Gonzalez from Aquatic Life Institute and Amanda Fox from Animal Rights Initiative delivered powerful in-person testimonies in support of this bill. Their efforts, combined with widespread support, led to the bill’s successful passage through the committee. Now, with this unanimous Senate vote, we are on the brink of a historic victory, as the bill is quickly on its way to become law. We are also grateful for the advocacy efforts from Animal Legal Defense Fund and Social Compassion in Legislation as co-sponsors of the bill.
