Claudia talks to lawyer and philosopher Gary Francione about abolition. Gary provides an overview of how ideas related to animals have emerged and changed since the 19th century. This includes the emergence of animal welfare, animal rights, and abolitionism. Throughout the interview Gary asserts that animal welfare and animal rights will not achieve anything until there is a paradigm shift whereby animals are no longer understood as property, food, or things to use. "A number of readers have been asking me to write something that they can download and use as a short response to those animal advocates who promote the welfarist approach and who do not understand why this approach is inconsistent with the rights/abolitionist position.... The sooner people see that the new welfarist groups have nothing to do with an abolitionist perspective, the better off we will be. The new welfarists have become partners with the institutional exploiters to sell animal products. It is nothing short of obscene that that the new welfarists are developing labels, such as the Certified Humane Raised and Handled label, the Freedom Food label, and the Animal Compassionate label, to help the institutional exploiters to market animal corpses and products. In Spain, footage from Animal Equality shows horses being improperly stunned and therefore killed while fully conscious in a horse slaughterhouse in Spain. So far they have collected nearly 300,000 signatures worldwide. Thanks to the WSAVA Reproduction Control Committe, we now have this reviewed tool to address a situation that is beeing present in any country and region. 📢 The new WSAVA Guidelines for the Control of Reproduction in Dogs and Cats are now available! The Guidelines have been prepared by the Reproduction Control Committee (RCC) and published in the Journal of Small Animal Practice, the WSAVA’s official scientific journal. They aim to help WSAVA members make science-based choices for the management of reproduction in their patients, while safeguarding animal welfare and supporting the human-companion animal bond. Included are discussions of current practice, together with explanations of newer approaches, both surgical and non-surgical. They also explore the health benefits and drawbacks of each method and explore ethical questions

This week, the RSPCA in partnership with the SSPCA and USPCA has launched the third ever animal Kindness Index. The Kindness Index is an annual survey of the British public’s attitudes towards animals. It’s a real treasure trove of information, with key findings this year including: - 68% of the public are animal lovers - 84% of the public want to see the government protects animals through legislation. - In a sobering statistic, almost a quarter of UK adults have witnessed animal cruelty online, and this increases to 43% of 16 and 17 year olds. This year we have introduced a new ‘Reality Check’ feature to measure the gap between attitudes and action courtesy of Rebecca Blewett and a refreshed web hub and pledge page thanks to Michelle Loa Kum Cheung . Thanks to all of my colleagues for making the launch of this year’s Kindness Index possible and Dalia Ben-Galim for her expert analysis.
