A topic of great interest for all of my career: I’m deeply obsessed with the reproductive cycle’s relationship to physiologic immune responsivity: from the vaginal tract, to human milk production, this is the ground work of human survival, microbiologically. The only microbiological world more important than this one is found in our soil. A very cool company and critically important topic. Slowing #prostatecancer progression with #plantbased nutrition and #lifestyle interventions. I have lived with low-risk, early-stage prostate cancer for thirteen years, and my PSA is lower today than when I was diagosed in 2010. I attribute my overall better health today to drastic lifestyle changes. What Are the Vaginal Microbiome Community State Types? #Mysummary Researchers from the University of Maryland have developed a new tool called VALENCIA (VAginaL community state typE Nearest CentroId clAssifier) that can categorize vaginal microbial communities into different community state types (CSTs). This tool uses a new algorithm to assign vaginal samples to specific CSTs based on their similarity. The researchers used a large dataset of over 13,000 vaginal microbial profiles from 1,975 women in the USA to define and characterize the CSTs. There are 5 main vaginal microbiome CSTs: 🔹Type 1 is the healthiest vaginal microbiome, with Lactobacillus crispatus as the essential bacteria. It prevents infections and health complications like infertility and preterm birth. Type 1 has two subtypes, but both are highly protective. 🔹Type 2 is healthy and dominated by Lactobacillus gasseri. It has a strong defense against infections and a decreased risk of developing BV (bacterial vaginosis), UTIs, and STIs. Type 2 is also associated with a lower risk of other health conditions such as infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, neonatal issues, and TSS. 🔹Type 3 is dominated by Lactobacillus iners, but it can coexist with both healthy and disruptive bacteria. If found with disruptive bacteria, it can cause symptoms like itching and abnormal discharge. When found with protective lactobacilli, it's neutral or even protective. Type 3 has two subtypes: 3-A and 3-B. The main difference is that 3-A has more L. iners. 🔹Type 4 is characterized by having low levels of lactobacilli and high bacterial diversity. This type can result in vaginal dysbiosis, which may increase the risk of infections and health complications such as STIs and pelvic inflammatory disease. Not all Type 4 communities are harmful. Women can be asymptomatic or colonized with protective bacteria such as Bifidobacterium. Type 4 is further divided into three subtypes. 🔹Type 5 is dominated by Lactobacillus jensenii which produces antimicrobial bacteriocins and D-lactic acid. It's rare but associated with good health, found in less than 10% of vaginas in research studies. #Mythoughts I think it is important to draw more attention and research to the vaginal microbiome and women's health not only for the benefit of the women but for generations to come.
