Support, Transform and Achieve through Rugby. Bridgnorth Rugby Club are supporting young players to get to training, ensuring they have all the kit they require and support they need. For more information contact Nerys Arch or Phil Jefferies who co-ordinate the scheme at Bridgnorth or for further information on the scheme checkout their website https://lnkd.in/dxFawYgd The star* scheme provides young people who have had multiple adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) with supported access to everything that local junior clubs and their amazing volunteer communities have to offer. ACEs are divided into three categories: abuse, household challenges and neglect. Examples of ACEs include enduring or being exposed to abuse or neglect, familial violence, mental illness, parental separation, divorce or substance abuse. ACEs can disrupt a child’s development and can impact social, emotional and cognitive impairment, which can lead to poor health outcomes and can negatively impact life expectancy. The negative impact of ACEs can be mitigated by encouraging safe, stable and nurturing relationships and environments all of which can be found in local junior rugby communities. The STAR scheme has been designed to facilitate access and formalise the support provided. The scheme removes all financial barriers to access (provides transport, kit, subs, food), creates a support network within the club for star* families and importantly provides coaching for the volunteer coaches as well as a star* manager who creates measurable personal development plans with the children and families.

FUN FACT: The Paralympic Games began back in the 1948 London Olympic Games, when there was a competition organised for wheelchair athletes named the Stoke Mandeville Games. There were 16 injured servicemen and women who took part in archery competitions. Eventually, this competition evolved into the Paralympic Games, which first took place in Rome, Italy, in 1960. This was a milestone event, and over 400 athletes from 23 countries took part. Katie Kelly, who has been an invaluable member of the Achieve Australia Board since April 2023, will be competing in the upcoming Paralympics. 📢A world first rugby program for neurodiverse young people. 😁Meet Charlie, a fabulous neurodiverse young person with the biggest and kindest heart! Charlie is showing the world what he can do, on and off the rugby field with GingerCloud Foundation Modified Rugby Program (MRP). On the rugby field, he is exhibiting sportsmanship and inclusion. He's not just playing the game; he’s leading by example. Off the field Charlie is motivating, mentoring and encouraging other neurodiverse young people to embrace and live their best life – empowering them to create a community where we all belong! GingerCloud’s MRP is a world-first, person centred, touch-only modified form of rugby union. Neurodiverse young people (7-18+ years) with Autism, Down Syndrome, ADHD or other learning and perceptual disabilities can play rugby with the support, guidance and friendship of a Volunteer at their local club. We want to ensure our MRP Players experience success and fun. 🏉🏉 🙌We want every neurodiverse young person to learn, explore and achieve, o Learning how to catch a ball with two hands. o Place the ball with two hands when scoring. o Tag opposing players with two hands. o Pass the ball backwards. o Run forward at all times. o Sportsmanship and teamwork. o How to be consistent. o How to communicate well. o How to help and support others. o How to speak up for yourselves. o Why a routine is important. o Why being on time is important. o Giving and receiving feedback. o Making friends and being social. 📨Positions are still available for the 2024 Season, email [email protected]. Thank you, St.George Bank for your continued partnership. Thank you for powering inclusion and ensuring #rugbyisforeveryone

Segregated vs Inclusive The extreme #inclusion advocates demand that #specialschools and #supportedemployment be eliminated because they are “segregated”. They say that these specialised services for people with intellectual disability cannot be seen as real choices because it’s the only option available . So it always surprises me to see other segregated events and settings be celebrated without any such protest. The latest one is the section of our swimming team for the Olympics (see story below). It’s a fabulous event celebrated by all -including me - and now they include the #Paralympic cohort as well. So what’s the problem you might say? Swimming athletes with intellectual disability -and many other types of disability - are not included because there is no opportunity for them to compete in Paris . That’s fine by me because I know it’s impossible to make everything fully inclusive for all. But I want everyone to see these events for what they inherently are -segregated. This story shows why Choices are so important for real inclusion and how one size can never fit all. It also shows why labels like segregated or inclusive are increasingly unhelpful. We should be talking about belonging and wellbeing because that’s what matters. #inclusion Liz Gosper OAM
