In May of this year, I ran a 100 mile relay race with my wife and one of our good friends. It took us over 16 hours, and I was responsible for 50 miles of it. After reflecting on the race over the last few months, I have realized how similar it was to my experience launching a startup. 1. Inevitably, you hit a wall. The race, just like my experience launching a startup, started off with excitement, adrenaline and a ton of energy. However, that didn’t last forever. When the wall came, we had to decide whether to climb it, bust through it, or give up because of it. During the race, my first wall hit around mile 21. (p.s. there will be multiple walls) 2. The purpose shouldn’t change, but the plan probably will. Going into the race, the three of us had mapped out a plan to complete the race as efficiently as possible. The purpose was to finish the race. However, the plan changed multiple times after we started. We had to adapt and execute on the fly in order to remain focused on the purpose of completing the race. 3. The right team will carry you closer to your goals. There were several times where one of us needed a pick-me-up. Without the support we had for each other, we wouldn’t have finished the race at all. The right team is just as important as the right product, if not more so.

Spend five minutes on LinkedIn or Luma or Meetup and you will observe a dramatic growth in new events supporting the region's ever-expanding community of startup founder. At the Venture Mechanics Startup Incubator / Accelerator we alone hold over 200 events a year for early stage founders and investors. Quite candidly, many of the new events that we see popping up like weeds in Seattle are redundant and basic, if they were ever anything more than just another networking event in the guise of a hot topic. A lot of them are just "me too" events, that don't bring anything truly fresh and innovative to the venture community. It's not uncommon to see six or more events and rooftop parties in downtown Seattle in a single night, and we frequently hear from founders that they have no idea which ones they should attend; frustrated that many that they have attended turned out to be of little intrinsic value in return for the time and parking hassles. So with that backdrop, I'm thrilled to share the news of a new group that actually is truly fresh and exciting, that's bringing something completely different to our ecosystem. Court Lorenzini, founder of DocuSign (a $13B enterprise today) is one of the most successful tech founders in Seattle history, and now a prolific venture investor who also believes in giving back. He has created this new organization, FounderNexus, an invitation-only membership organization that serves the community of venture-scale founders. Launching initially in Seattle, the organization has global growth ambitions. Participants are expected to fill out an application and screening test to assure a top quality experience. The more previous startups under your belt, the better. A few years ago, I was in a meeting with a group of incredibly smart people who kept talking about "milestones." I was like, “Huh? What’s a milestone? Some new tech jargon I missed out on?” 🤔 Fast forward to today, and here we are: You, me, Khachik, Vachik, Hrachik, and ten other amazing folks are teaming up in a startup with a single mission—launching a brand-new app within a year. Impressive, right? 🚀 So, what’s the game plan? Well, the next day, Khachik might ask, “What’s on our to-do list?” And the answer is: “We’re working to launch an app—hooray!” 🎉 But how do we get from just an idea to an actual launch? If I'd known the ins and outs of the answer, who knows? I would have been a CTO somewhere. But here's the scoop: milestones are our secret sauce. They break down our big, shiny goal into bite-sized, manageable steps. Each small win gets us closer to our objective and keeps us motivated and on track. And the best part? We should totally celebrate every milestone because, honestly, every step forward deserves a little cheer. 🍾
