😎 SAVE THE DATE – COP28 and the Mangrove Breakthrough host A Breakthrough Moment for Mangroves on Nature Land Use and Ocean Day.   This ministerial and non-state actor led event brings together the major partnerships and initiatives behind the Mangrove Breakthrough - the global target to restore and protect 15 million hectares of mangroves and halt mangrove destruction by 2030. DAY TEN The sustainability of nature, land use, and oceans is integral to achieving the Paris Agreement’s goals. The world’s climate and its biodiversity are inextricably interconnected, one cannot exist without the other. Mitigating both crises must therefore be integrated. Cop15 to the Convention on Biological Diversity in December led to the signing of a historic biodiversity agreement to protect at least 30 per cent of the planet’s land and water by 2030. Cop28 will focus on delivering climate and nature co-benefits through a range of financing mechanisms and packages, co-designed with local and Indigenous Peoples, to sustainably manage and conserve natural carbon sinks and biodiversity hot spots. The day will also seek to accelerate private sector commitments to nature-positive accountability frameworks. Looking back at COP28, one significant moment for me was the launch of the Nature Positive Initiative with Marco Lambertini Eva Zabey and many others. https://lnkd.in/eTzqnU5V The evidence has never been clearer. The impacts of climate change and an unfolding biodiversity crisis on humanity are profound and will not be felt equally. Humanity cannot thrive in the decades to come while we are surpassing planetary boundaries. Since December 2019, a group of CEOs from Environmental Organizations, Sustainable Business Platforms and Research Institutions have been convening to identify and advocate for an ambitious, science-based and measurable global goal for nature, and for this goal to be adopted internationally. The lack of a clear and measurable goal for addressing the nature loss crisis was a major obstacle to aligning on ambition, driving action and increasing accountability. The group recognized the need for an overarching goal that could have the same impact as and which would mutually reinforce both the Paris Agreement goal of 1.5 degrees (and the net zero emissions pathway to it) and the equity-oriented Sustainable Development Goals. This includes recognition that neither of those other vital global agendas can be met without also halting and reversing nature loss by 2030. Nature Positive is by default therefore also People Positive, since a healthy environment is only possible to achieve through social inclusion and equity, while providing social benefits for all people. In December 2022, the UN CBD COP 15 adopted a Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) whose mission is to ‘halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030’, and by 2050, biodiversity is valued, conserved, restored and widely used, maintaining ecosystems services, sustaining a healthy planet and delivering benefits essential for all people’, which is consistent with the Nature Positive goal.

#COP28: 🌿 Insights and Reflections from the Coalition for Rainforest Nations Discussion, Building #20 I recently had the opportunity to participate in a thought-provoking discussion at the Coalition for Rainforest Nations, Building #20. The conversation brought forth several compelling points: Measuring Nature's Integrity: The challenge lies in quantifying the balance between human activity and the natural world. Humanity's Survival vs. Planetary Health: The planet's endurance is certain, but the question remains: can humanity sustain itself in harmony with nature? Beyond Emissions: Solving climate change issues encompasses more than emissions reduction, addressing broader environmental challenges like famine and the loss of biodiversity. Valuing Nature's Custodians: Rather than viewing nature itself as an asset, which can be problematic, it's crucial to recognize and financially support those who steward nature. This includes farmers, local stakeholders, and indigenous communities, who play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. Sustainable Renewable Energy: Urgent shifts towards renewable energy must be carefully planned to avoid unsustainable practices. Finance's Role in Conservation: Financial strategies could be crucial in conserving nature, offering innovative solutions to ecological challenges. COP28 and Nature's Voice: Nature's increasing prominence in climate discussions at COP28 marks a shift in global priorities, but there's still much work to be done. Private Sector Awareness of Biodiversity: Businesses are increasingly recognizing the importance of biodiversity, reflecting significant changes in corporate perspectives. Global South Partnerships: Collaborative efforts in the Global South highlight the need for inclusive approaches involving diverse stakeholders. Monetizing Nature for Conservation: Assigning economic value to nature can lead to more effective conservation strategies. Preservation over Restoration: It's more viable and effective to maintain nature's current state than to restore it later. Regulation and Corporate Responsibility: Developing regulatory frameworks and corporate responsibility metrics for nature conservation is crucial. These insights from the Coalition for Rainforest Nations highlight the complexity of environmental sustainability and the need for an integrated approach. 🌍 IUCN Position Paper for UNFCCC COP28 🌍 As the world gears up for the next round of the UNFCCC UN, IUCN emphasizes 10 crucial messages for #COP28: 1️⃣ Limit Warming to 1.5°C: Urgent phasing out of fossil fuels is paramount to bridge the ambition gap highlighted by IPCC AR6. 2️⃣ Global Stocktake To Drive Action: The outcomes should drive more ambitious climate actions, aligning with the Paris Agreement's goals. 3️⃣ Integrate Climate and Biodiversity Efforts: Recognize and support nature-based solutions for immediate benefits in mitigation, adaptation, and biodiversity conservation. 4️⃣ Set Ambitious NDCs: Parties should elevate their commitments, incorporating concrete nature-based solutions within National Adaptation Plans and Long-Term Low Emission Development Strategies. 5️⃣ Scaling Up Finance is Key: Scale up global climate financing, meet the $100 billion/year goal, and ensure Indigenous communities receive a fair share. 6️⃣ Ensure High-integrity Nature-based Solutions: Implement the IUCN Global Standard to design, verify, and scale up initiatives while avoiding greenwashing. 7️⃣ Accelerate Renewable Energy: Pursue just transitions, avoiding negative impacts on communities and ecosystems, aligning with the Global Biodiversity Framework. 8️⃣ Avoid Temperature Rise Overshoot: Caution against unproven geoengineering technologies, emphasizing the risks and irreversible impacts. 9️⃣ Draft Inclusive and Equitable Policies: Prioritize the most vulnerable, ensuring Indigenous peoples, women, and youth are integrated at all levels of climate policy. 🔟 Encourage Stakeholder Collaboration: Encourage private sector and civil society to actively contribute to addressing the interlinked climate and biodiversity crises. Mangrove Breakthrough Financial Road Map Launch: Exciting news from Global Mangrove Alliance as the financial road map takes flight, aiming to amplify capital flow into mangrove protection and restoration. 2. Coral Reef Breakthrough Launch: A pivotal moment as initiatives launch to secure the future of over 125,000 Km2 of shallow water tropical reefs. A substantial investment of at least US$12 billion will bolster the resilience of more than half a billion people. G20 CORDAP (Coral Research & Development Accelerator Platform) 3. Power of Blue Carbon and Biodiversity Credits: COP 28 events underscore the critical role of blue carbon, carbon credits, and biodiversity credits in supporting nature and humanity. 4.Seagrass Conservation Commitment by Seychelles: Seychelles leads by example, committing to sharing best practices for seagrass conservation with the Western Indian Ocean region. 5.Great Blue Wall's Call for Collaboration: The Great Blue Wall shares its plans and extends a call for collaboration, emphasizing the collective effort needed for ocean conservation. IUCN Week one has left us inspired, reinforcing the fundamental need to collaborate with nature. I am eagerly anticipating week two and the dedicated sessions on Ocean's Day, where more commitments and actions will unfold to safeguard our blue planet. The themes for Day 9 of #COP28 were nature, land use and oceans. There was a raft of financial pledges for nature and climate action, further support for protecting and restoring Mangroves and a reassertion by Ministers of the 1.5°C-aligned energy transition. 🔵 Over $186 million of new financing for nature and climate towards forests, mangroves and the ocean was announced, building on the $2.5 billion mobilized to protect and restore nature during COP28’s World Climate Action Summit (WCAS). This additional funding sits within the context of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework passed in 2022, that aims to to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and create a world living in harmony with nature by 2050. 🔵 The role of Mangroves as biodiversity hotspots, carbon sinks, and for reducing coastal erosion was recognized with a further 21 countries endorsing the ‘Mangrove Breakthrough’ project – originally launched at COP27. Alongside the project’s main aim to protect 15 million hectares of mangroves globally by 2030, it calls for increased action and investment by governments and non-state actors in proven solutions for conserving and restoring mangrove ecosystems. 🔵 The COP28 Presidency and the International Energy Agency (IEA) concluded their High-Level Dialogues with the final Dialogue featuring over 40 Heads of State, Ministers and business leaders from Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia.
