Do men and women without a home deserve quality food? Do you think "restaurant quality" when you think of soup kitchens? Neither do I. One thing that differentiates The Bowery Mission from other public places serving meals to those in need, is variety, quality, and choice. "The food here is really really good. I used to work at a restaurant and I used to be a prep cook and line cook. For those experiencing homelessness, a consistent, high-quality meal can be a rare luxury, a moment of normalcy, and a vital foundation for rebuilding their lives. Why does quality matter? ➡ Health: Homeless individuals often face pre-existing health conditions that require proper nutrition. We offer balanced, nutritious meals. ➡ Dignity: A delicious, well-prepared meal shows respect and care. By diversifying what we do as an organisation, we better meet the needs of those in food insecurity About 9 months ago I was in a meeting talking about our food provision and where we could offer support. It was mentioned in passing that there was a real need for mints and out of all the possible food provision we’ve considered, it’s never been a contender. The need was for individuals who were rough sleeping that were embarrassed about their breath when talking to professionals and this really struck a chord about how such a simple item can make sure a difference. It became a back burner thought as it wasn’t something we could immediately officer, but then several more times the concept of improving our food provision to meet the needs of rough sleepers came up and it very quickly became a priority. The realisation that we were giving boxes of mostly tinned food to homeless people because some of it could be used was an issue we needed to address. It wasn’t a good use of our resources and it wasn’t best supporting our partners or recipients I’m so privileged to work for Feeding Families (UK) that lets me run with my ideas and I’m really proud of the work we’ve done as a team to launch rough sleeper packs. The food is not provided in boxes that cannot be stored, but rather bags that can go in coats or rucksacks. It contains high protein food and none of if requires unavailable cooking facilities. We know it’s not resolving the bigger issue, but if we can add one positive element to support that individuals basic needs then it frees up professionals to help them with bigger issues knowing that suitable food is available. During rainy days, our hardworking food riders and delivery workers often face challenging conditions that can lead to delays. Let's remember to treat them with kindness and understanding. Weather conditions can slow down travel and create unexpected obstacles, so please be patient if your delivery takes a bit longer than usual. Delivery workers are doing their best to get your items to you safely, so a little courtesy can brighten their day, especially in difficult weather. Consider expressing your gratitude with a thank you or a small tip for their extra effort in the rain. Additionally, help delivery workers by keeping pathways to your door clear and safe, especially in wet conditions. Let’s support and appreciate the essential service that delivery workers provide, rain or shine. #hardwork #deliveyboys.

Must watched & should learn a lesson

COVID March 23rd 2020 was a scary day. Boris said that everywhere was in LOCKDOWN; with only emergencies being a reason for us to venture out for more than a quick walk. It was the 2nd time I thought we were finished. Mossgiel was exposed 90% to hospitality – coffee shops, workplaces, bakeries, & ice cream makers; everyone was to close. One by one, emails signed off cancelled orders with ‘good luck’ and ‘stay strong’; everyone was scared. On farms, it can be surreal when major events happen – it’s not a factory where machines can be turned off; cows need cared for, plants still grow in the fields and life goes on. So when supermarkets were running out of everything from toilet roll to potatoes; we realised the tools we had – vans, a cold store, friends in the local food biz and a team ready to do what needed done to help keep our local community fed. We opened an online store where people could buy local food that we could collect and deliver. We also teamed up with a local caterer to supply ready-made meals, and a wholesaler for toilet rolls and washing up liquid. Living in rural Ayrshire meant there were addresses in the sticks hard to find, with some people stranded as transport wasn’t running. This caused HUGE issues trying to find where people stayed, especially when delivering at nights – so one of our team mentioned they’d come across ‘What3Words’, a location app that pinpointed people anywhere on the planet, then used satnav to take you there. Another in our team linked our website to W3W, so supporters could pinpoint exactly where they were – giving our delivery drivers a leg up to get supplies where they were needed. But, we all lived through Covid – why am I bringing it up? Because, in these first few days of lockdown, I witnessed the very best of humanity – people supported each other, took time to learn new skills and research what awesome stuff was happening in their local area. We had so many conversations about the tatties grown on our neighbour’s farm, that eggs came from 3 miles away and that the cows people could see on their commute to work were the ones producing the milk in their breakfast cereal. It was a local food revolution!
