Archangel Investors Limited’s Post

We are all incredibly saddened by Barry Sealey’s passing yesterday and our sincere condolences go out to his family. Having co-founded Archangels more than 30 years ago with Mike Rutterford, Barry was a true pioneer of angel investing. Mike and Barry got together with the intention of helping young Scottish companies grow – neither anticipated that more than thirty years later they’d have had an impact far exceeding that original intent.   Barry himself would have been very proud of what he built and the impact that Archangels companies have had in Scotland and around the world. More than 5000 jobs created and nearly £200m invested in some of Scotland’s most exciting and innovative young companies, many of which are using technology to deliver significant social impacts. From the sight-saving technology of Optos to the world-leading prosthetic technologies of Touch Bionics, Barry’s legacy investments are testament to the impact he set out to achieve back in 1992. He will be missed by all who knew him.

I’m very sad at this and miss him. We became good friends when he was chairman of the Royal Infirmary Trust. He encouraged the doctors to take responsibility delivering the design they wanted on time and then delivered it on time and on budget, still a singular event in public sector capital projects since 1990. He got me to join Archangels when I was nearly retired, guessing correctly I would enjoy myself hugely. The years since Helen became ill have been awful but he was cheerful when I last saw him. That’s what I’ll remember

This is very sad news I first met Barry when I was introduced to Archangels. He interviewed me at his offices and I remember he opened the door smiled and looked straight down at my shoes to see if I had polished them. I immediately took to him and at one point, when seeking advice, he was only too happy to help and coach me. He left a lasting impression on me and I often think about him.

Really sad to hear this news as one of my previous companies received investment from Archangels after a meeting with Barry & Mike. They were true pioneers that invested in some of us in those days and helped to propel us forward. Rest in Peace Barry! Your legacy will live on.

I got to know Barry when I chaired the Scottish NHS Chairs Group and Barry was Chair of Edinburgh Royal Infirmary NHS Trust. A man of great ability but also possessing an enormous sense of fun. His contribution to NHS Scotland development was immense as was his ability to connect with and relate to a very wide range of people. Many fine memories!

Our deepest sympathies are with Barry Sealey's family and the Archangels community. His legacy in angel investing and the positive social impact of the companies he helped are truly remarkable. How do you envision continuing his work and expanding on his vision for the future?
