The traditional architecture of Ibiza is characterised by small windows and thick walls. This design element serves multiple purposes; primarily, the walls provide natural insulation, keeping the interior cool during the summer months, with the help of the small apertures allowing little sunlight in. However, the architecture was also originally intended for defence in mind. With the island frequently under threat, the architecture made it more challenging for invaders to penetrate the buildings. This white clapboard house, with its Doric porches and hipped roofs, was built in the 1820’s by the Lloyds family and sits overlooking the Wye River in Easton, MD. This house is one of 4 remaining Lloyd houses still standing today. Our goal in the design was to retain/replicate as much of the original fabric of the house as possible. In doing so we managed to seamlessly add exterior porches and massing that mimicked the existing structure.
