Today is #Juneteenth (Freedom Day) and at @authoracare, we recognize its impact as the start of creating lasting change. The Emancipation Proclamation, which was issued on Jan. 1, 1863, didn’t go into effect until more than 2 ½ years later, on June 19, 1865. That’s when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to free all enslaved people. Juneteenth blends the words “June” and “nineteenth” and has been celebrated since 1866. Celebrations can include church-centered community gatherings to highlight African-American freedom and arts. President Joe Biden signed legislation in 2021 establishing Juneteenth as a U.S. federal holiday. I would LOVE and APPRECIATE your questions and comments on this day. This is not black history, This is American history. We just happened to be black in it. After this day, June 19th, 1865, so much happened. Under the direction of then President Andrew Johnson, nearly all the southern states would enact their own black codes in 1865 and 1866. While the codes granted certain freedoms to African Americans—including the right to buy and own property, marry, make contracts and testify in court (only in cases involving people of their own race)—their primary purpose was to restrict Black peoples’ labor and activity. Black people who broke labor contracts were subject to arrest, beating and forced labor, and apprenticeship laws forced many minors (either orphans or those whose parents were deemed unable to support them by a judge 🤨) into unpaid labor for white planters. Passed by a political system in which Black people effectively had no voice, the black codes were enforced by all-white police and state militia forces—often made up of Confederate veterans of the Civil War—across the South. After passing the Civil Rights Act (over Johnson’s veto), Republicans in Congress effectively took control of Reconstruction. The Reconstruction Act of 1867 required southern states to ratify the 14th Amendment—which granted “equal protection” of the Constitution to former enslaved people—and enact universal male suffrage before they could rejoin the Union. The 15th Amendment, adopted in 1870, guaranteed that a citizen’s right to vote would not be denied “on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” During this period of Radical Reconstruction (1867-1877), Black men won election to southern state governments and even to the U.S. Congress. However, white southerners showed a steadfast commitment to ensuring their supremacy and the survival of plantation agriculture in the postwar years. Support for Reconstruction policies waned after the early 1870s, undermined by the violence of white supremacist organizations such as the Ku Klux Klan. By 1877, Black people had seen little improvement in their economic and social status, and the vigorous efforts of white supremacist forces throughout the region had undone the political gains they had made. Discrimination would continue in America with the rise of Jim Crow laws, but would inspire the civil rights movement to come. For more information on this post, go to HISTORY.COM

We can acknowledge and even celebrate the truth of our history together without dissension. Reality: On this day in 1865, two and a half years after President Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, approximately 2000 Union troops arrived in Galveston and declared by executive decree that slaves were free. This order freed over 250,000 black people that were still enslaved in Texas. Why was it delayed? The Emancipation Proclamation could not be implemented in areas that were under Confederate control. Why do we acknowledge and celebrate this day? We acknowledge it because it happened. We celebrate it because the freedom of any person or people who was once unfairly held in bondage, abused and mistreated, should be celebrated. Though there was and still is in some places an uphill battle, freed slaves who survived faced many hardships and heartaches. Many searched for family members that they had been separated from hence the importance of reunions. They had to figure out the safe places where they could gain employment and settle. They were resilient during times when many would have given up and their resilience led to the progression of a people and progression a country. A call to action: No matter your race or ethnicity, don’t be afraid to acknowledge the hard truths of our past as well as the good. The important part is to work in unity today and not allow for the mistreatment and abuse of others to happen again. Dating back to 1865, Juneteenth commemorates the day when 250,000 slaves in the state of Texas, which became the last bastion for slavery during the final days of the Civil War, were declared free by the U.S. Army. Juneteenth has become the most prominent Emancipation Day holiday in the US, it commemorates a smaller moment that remains relatively obscure. It doesn’t mark the signing of the 1863 Emancipation Proclamation, which technically freed slaves in the rebelling Confederate states, nor does it commemorate the December 1865 ratification of the 13th Amendment, which enshrined the end of slavery into the Constitution. Instead, it marks the moment when emancipation finally reached those in the deepest parts of the former Confederacy. Juneteenth represents how freedom and justice in the US has always been delayed for black people. The decades after the end of the war would see a wave of lynching, imprisonment, and Jim Crow laws take root. What followed was the disproportionate impact of mass incarceration, discriminatory housing policies, and a lack of economic investment. And now, as national attention remain focused on acts of police violence and various racial profiling incidents, it is clear that while progress has been made in black America’s 150 years out of bondage, considerable barriers continue to impede that progress.

Nearly 160 years after the end of slavery, significant disparities persist between Black and white Americans. This column studies the long-run effects of #slavery, and the Jim Crow laws that enforced racial #segregation following the Civil War, on Black Americans’ economic outcomes. ⭐Those whose ancestors were enslaved until the Civil War have less #education, #income, and #wealth than Black families whose ancestors were free. 👉These disparities persist not simply because of slavery, but because most families enslaved until the Civil War lived in states with strict Jim Crow regimes when slavery ended. I should have edited this video. It's long. There is an awkward pause. And another one. I'm not as good with my words here. That's okay. I'm talking about race. And that's uncomfortable. I grew up in Idaho. Everyone looked like me. I looked like everybody. We didn't talk about diversity or race. Because why would we? If we did, I don't recall any champions for justice. I had a LOT to learn. Like this: while we celebrate Juneteenth, the 13th amendment abolished slavery in 1862. By design, it took 2 ½ years for news to reach the last slaves in Galveston, Texas. On June 19th, 1865.  Not even justice was justly delivered. The sacrifice and suffering originating from American slavery is a stain on our history. It has been replaced with systemic, structural racism that persists. Especially in real estate. We can make a difference here. The future is ours to advance a more just and equitable future. It’s one thing to reflect and learn. It’s another to act. It's the work of individuals and business leaders to insist on change, then make it. It's my work. This is when we commemorate America’s second independence day, marking the day when enslaved people in Texas learned that the Emancipation Proclamation had passed two years earlier. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks, an African-American passenger, refused to give up her bus seat in the "coloured section" of a bus to a White male passenger when the "White section" was full, and the bus driver asked her to give up her seat. Her action was an act of civil disobedience against the then Alabama's racial segregation law on public buses. That law was later overturned by a U.S. district court on June 5, 1956, and subsequently affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court on November 13, 1956, in a case called Browder v. Gayle. It's good, however, to note that Rosa Parks was not the first person who refused to give up his/her seat; several people did it years and months before Madam Parks. Before the bus incident, Madam Parks was a seamstress at a department store and a Sunday School teacher at her church. Congress called Rosa Parks the "First Lady of civil rights,” and she became the first lady to lay in honour in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda. Military and government officials lay in state, while civilians and non-government officials lay in honour in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda.
