⚽ Football deal value is 💥 thanks to private capital In recent years, private capital has been flowing into football and increasing dealmaking specially following a MCO, a situation where a party has investment stakes, as minority or majority shareholder, in more than one football club. These MCOs often operate by having a “star club” at the top of the pyramid competing in the strongest leagues and adding smaller “satellite clubs” as part of the MCO structure. ✔ 41.7% of the “Big Five” European clubs are part of an MCO structure as of the 2023-2024 season. ✔ 60.0% of the Big Five clubs operating within an MCO structure have US participation at the ownership level. Silver Lake, Ares Management Corporation, 777 Partners, MSP Sports Capital, Pacific Media Group, Arctos and #BlueCo are all private capital sponsors currently investing in MCOs. In a strategic move, CMS Albiñana & Suárez de Lezo has provided advisory expertise to the Spanish startup PLAYTOMIC, a renowned digital platform for racket sports reservations, in the acquisition of Sportclubby, an Italian company specializing in digital sports reservation management. The acquisition of Sportclubby expands Playtomic’s reach and solidifies its position in the digital sports reservation landscape. The seasoned CMS Albiñana & Suárez de Lezo’s team leading this operation was headed by partner Alfonso Codes Calatrava (public law and regulated sectors, pictured left), and associate Jose Luis Rodríguez Ontiveros (corporate/M&A, pictured right). The collaborative effort also included partner Carlos Peña (corporate/ M&A), alongside with Alberto Mata Rodríguez, counsel Borja Vázquez and associate Rodrigo Urosa Fernández (all banking and finance).
