Social media, Linkedin especially, are powerful tools. It’s remarkable the connections you can make through Linkedin and what they can lead to. Too many people are afraid to put themselves out there because they are afraid of what other people will think. If you’re a business, and not utilizing Linkedin, you’re shooting yourself in the foot. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there.

This year I set many goals for myself. One of which was to become a better writer and storyteller in life and in sales.  I started by connecting with Parker Worth and taking his course. Next, I set my eyes on platforms that I could contribute to. Now I find myself writing and making content for FreightCaviar. The best advice I can give is just start. If you want to become better at something you aren’t going to improve by doing nothing. Your first piece will suck, so will your second, but you’ll learn from those mistakes and craft over time. Start and keep going.

NBA DRAFT EVE: The NBA draft is one of my favorite events of the year. It's a chance for players to actualize their dreams and for teams to change their future. This past year I was fortunate enough to scout two of the top prospects in this year's draft Matas Buzelis and Ron Holland from the G-League Ignite Here are my takeaways: Holland is athletic and loves to attack the rim. He is great at finishing through contact. He does lack shooting, making him just another athletic guard. Matas Buzelis has length and size but is not a great shooter. He struggled to hold onto the ball in the G-League averaging 2.1 TOs per game. Matas is a great defender and rim protector averaging 2.1 blocks per game. The speed of the NBA game could be problematic for him. I think Holland has the potential to turn into a Jalen Green-like player if he develops his shot. If Matas develops a shot and puts on some muscle he could be a reliable 18-10 Power Forward.

How Day 1 Thinking can be applied to Freight and Your Business: A few weeks ago Lex Friedman interviewed Jeff Bezos. Bezos mentions his strategy of always being in “Day 1 thinking." Day 1 Thinking puts the customer at the center of every decision. Day 1 thinking encourages nimble decision-making, customer obsession, maintaining long-term focus, and the willingness to fail fast and start over. You are in constant growth and decision mode. Every day is the beginning. Staying in Day 1 can be hard. Especially for a company like Amazon that experienced such tremendous growth. Here’s why… You and your organization run the risk of falling into Day 2 thinking. Day 2 thinking breeds content and focuses shifts toward managing the company internally. Decision-making can slow and the focus moves away from customer satisfaction. Day 2 Thinking, according to Bezos, “Is stasis. Followed by irrelevance. Followed by an excruciating, painful decline. Followed by death. And that is why it is always Day 1.” In order to stay out of Day 2, the company must stay hyper-focused on its customers, while still being able to make quick decisions as the company scales. Day 1 Thinking can be applied to your everyday life and your relationships with friends and family as well as your organization. Here’s how…. You just spent one year prospecting a Fortune 500 shipper. FINALLY… They agree to bring you on. Treat every transaction with them as if it is the first. The first few weeks you are going to be on top of your game. Tracking every shipment and A+ communication....Day 1 Thinking. If you fall into Day 2 you’ll become less communicative, service will slip, and before you know it you’ll be removed from their network. Staying in Day 1 encourages employees and managers to lead and be innovative. Obsessing over customer satisfaction will NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE. What are you doing to stay in Day 1?

THE UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES OF NEARSHORING There has been a lot of talk lately about nearshoring in Mexico. Especially in the world of logistics. Everyone loves the Costco Hot Dog. Costco prides itself on never raising the price of the Hot Dog. The Price has stood at $1.50 USD since 1984. Here in Mexico, the Costco Hotdog is priced at $30 Pesos. For many years, the exchange rate was $20 Pesos to $1 USD. That meant the $30 Peso hot dog was $1.50 USD. Since many companies have moved operations to Mexico the peso has gained strength against the dollar. Currently, the Peso sits at $17.12 to $1 USD. This means a $30 peso Costco Hot Dog is now $1.75 USD! Who knew the unintended consequences of nearshoring would have a direct effect on the Costco Hot Dog? Should Costco lower the price of the hot dog in Mexico?
