Micaela Saviano, a partner at Deloitte Tax LLP, emphasizes the importance of exploring external candidates, as it may provide more confidence in the selection process. Theo Martin, who owns multiple businesses in Seattle, has taken legal steps to ensure a smooth transition, but acknowledges the possibility that his children may choose different paths. Max Hughes, senior manager at Deloitte Transactions and Business Analytics LLP, suggests that succession does not have to be an all-or-nothing affair. Instead, business founders can consider themselves as "chairmen" or "guard rails," providing high-level guidance while giving the next generation room to grow into their new responsibilities.
