To any and all clientside marketers and in-house creative teams in my orbit, the Inside Out Awards should definitely be on your radar. Back when Emma and Sarah launched these much needed awards a decade ago, I had the immense pleasure of hosting the awards two, or was it three, times, as well as being a judge too. The quality of the work was impressive and it was such a pleasure to see it being celebrated too. And that’s the point of awards. There are an opportunity to take a step back, look at the work and be proud of what the team have accomplished. Having the work celebrated by your peers is a huge boost to morale. It brings teams together. It validated the ideas. It drives the industry forward. I’ve seen the looks on the faces of the teams who’ve been shortlisted or won, and that’s why awards like this are important. How do we share power with young artists, recognizing their voices, perspectives, and contributions as valuable assets in decision-making processes? Here are some effective ways to achieve this: Authentic Engagement: Actively involve young people in discussions and decisions that affect them. Provide opportunities for them to express their views, ideas, and concerns in a safe and supportive environment. This can include youth councils, focus groups, and regular consultations. Co-Creation: Collaborate with young people in the design, planning, and implementation of programs, policies, and initiatives. Encourage them to participate in brainstorming sessions, workshops, and creative projects where their input shapes the outcome. This fosters a sense of ownership and investment in the outcomes. Shared Leadership: Empower young people to take on leadership roles and responsibilities within organizations, communities, and projects. This could involve mentoring programs, youth-led initiatives, and opportunities to serve on decision-making boards or committees alongside adults. Capacity Building: Provide training, resources, and support to help young people develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence they need to participate effectively in decision-making processes. This includes communication skills, critical thinking, advocacy, and leadership development. Transparent Communication: Be transparent about how decisions are made and the reasons behind them. Keep young people informed about the decision-making process, timelines, and outcomes. This builds trust and accountability in the relationship between young people and decision-makers. Feedback Mechanisms: Establish mechanisms for young people to provide feedback and evaluation on programs, services, and policies. Actively listen to their feedback, take it seriously, and use it to inform future decision-making and improvements. Effectiveness in the boardroom (I.e., governing well) is first and foremost a relational. Note in this example that structure and process (which appears to have never been formally defined) did little to help the Board and CEO work together with a collective focus on mission. The style of board leadership only created friction and ultimately their dismissal after harassment charges were affirmed. And, at the end of the day, relational risk meant the whole organization suffered. It would be wrong to think this is unusual in many boardrooms.

“To Cannes or not Cannes?” There seemed to be a time when people celebrated success, rewarded creativity and banded together as a bunch of talented misfits, celebrating the great and good of the advertising industry, applauding each other whilst getting totally off their nut with only photos to prove they were there. Sadly (to me) it seems those times have gone. Yes, Cannes cost a lot of money. Yes, it’s all a bit pretentious, and yes, there will be PLENTY of folks who say it’s shite - however I bet if someone did a survey it would be those that didn’t get invited, couldn’t afford to go, couldn’t get time off, or are simply aren't that good that complain the loudest. Yes, yes, there will be those that hate crowds, don’t care about awards and think the whole thing is a bunch of irritating guff… If this was true let’s scrap all forms of awards then. The Oscars? Who gives a shit. Having had the pleasure to work with creatives at all levels (from interns to CCO’s) across the globe, and from all walks of life, I know so many of them care a great deal when their work is applauded on the global stage. It means a HUGE amount to them. If you don’t care, that’s fine. But I’ve seen so much negativity around Cannes on LinkedIn and ‘what it stands for’ it’s made my stomach churn. Choosing not to enter, to shy away from awards quietly is perfectly fine. Knowing who you are, what you stand for, and ensuring best in-class results for you, your team, your clients is HUGELY admirable. Honestly... that would probably be my style and approach. However, if I won at Cannes I’d be proud as hell. The recognition of my efforts, my teams efforts, my agencies efforts, my family for putting up with all my late nights and mood swings, etc. So, if you have won at Cannes, well fucking done. If you have attended for the event to rub shoulders with influencers, meet mates, or just to get pissed. Well done to you too. Here’s to the awards, the parties and the hangovers. Malcolm Poynton, Global CCO of Cheil Worldwide Speaks About the Invaluable Bootcamp that is Creative LIAisons, an educational initiative funded by LIA, to train emerging talent, coaching them to their full potential. Malcolm was on the 2023 LIA Integration Jury. Malcolm highlights that during the Creative LIAisons onsite bootcamp, young creatives get a glimpse into what goes on in the judging rooms, they experience real time, high pressure ideation and executing a brief with a deadline, during a workshop and they receive face time with some of the world's industry leaders. In addition, he goes on to talk about the virtual coaching program and how impactful it is for mentees to get one-to-one access to the leaders of the industry, to be able to ask the mentors any questions they have at this stage in their careers and for mentors to also find out what is going on at that level. Malcolm comments, "that we are seeing the Creative LIAisons program in person and online accelerating the growth and depth of capability in the creative up and coming in the industry, the next generation, who will define what comes next. It is so import, because traditional learning structures have pretty much evaporated from the industry.
