After a year of conversations and filming, I’m proud to launch our Outside In(novation) series, by far one of the most fascinating projects I’ve worked on during my tenure at Novartis. Made in collaboration with leaders from the patient; founder; investment; academic; pharma; and policy communities, we’ll be posting highlights from some candid conversations around what exactly patient-centricity means for healthcare innovation…. and where we still need to do the hard yards to ensure that new innovations actually reach and impact the communities that they intend to serve.   We aimed to go far beyond the buzz words, and to ask some thornier questions. These include: 👉 How are patient communities directly driving investment in modern healthcare? 👉   How does proper community engagement track to building out a value proposition for a new innovation? 👉 How does one maintain patient-centricity when building out tools for a healthcare system, which may have population-level incentives?  👉 ⭐ And a super crucial one: what can collaborators do differently (and better) when engaging communities?   Those we interviewed were optimistic on a shift from people asking *why* we need to build innovation from the outside in, but rather *how best* to do it.  We at Novartis agree: we remain committed to ensuring that our research and development efforts are built hand-in-hand with the patient community from day one, and that these collaborations extend to shared advocacy for healthcare and access policies that more clearly serve patients. More importantly, we also understand that partnering with communities is an iterative process: innovators of all sizes must always be in “learning mode” as they jointly navigate a path to cutting-edge innovations.  Bottom line: it’s clear how far we’ve already come together, and how much further we'll get together.   A huge thanks to everyone that helped bring this series to life, from those we interviewed to the many creatives that lent their talents to the myriad locations that let us set up and film.   Follow this space for more, starting next week with Orla Galvin BSc PhD Galvan from EFNA! We talk a lot about the need to increase diversity in clinical trials, but the solutions are often right in front of us, and not being taken advantage of! Our industry is somewhat unique in that we place too much emphasis on avoiding risk. We're so afraid of trying something new that we miss out on opportunities to drive meaningful change. We can't keep doing the same things and expecting different results. The research sites are already doing amazing work to gain trust with diverse populations. I’m thrilled to be in San Francisco this week to join clients, industry leaders and colleagues at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference. I look forward to this event annually as a way to jumpstart meaningful conversations for the year ahead.   Several issues came up in conversations this week:   1️⃣ The incredible impact the life sciences industry has delivered in transforming lives and fueling innovations.   The industry invests $200b annually in Research & Development, and there is an expanding pipeline of compounds in clinical development, especially in oncology; yet there was a somber recognition that not all patients benefit from life-saving innovations.   Addressing these health equity gaps will require addressing socially determined drivers of health. And no one organisation can do this alone. I am optimistic that our industry will come together to demonstrate real leadership to drive breakthrough innovations for all. This was the focus of our breakfast discussion with 50+ industry CXOs.   2️⃣ The potential of technology and innovation – notably the once-in-a-generation opportunity presented by AI and now supplemented by generative AI and LLMs – to accelerate discovery of new therapeutics, make clinical trials more efficient and reduce risk, and to offer more cost effective ultra-targeted medical interventions.   Our research sizes this opportunity at $60 billion to $110 billion a year in economic value, not to mention the broader societal benefit to all stakeholders. Harnessing this powerful new technology, of course, will not be easy. Leaders will have to grapple with tricky strategic decisions and operational challenges in an uncharted landscape marked by fast-changing technology and emerging risks.   There are questions to work through regarding the talent and capabilities the industry needs in this new era; how to rewire the way companies operate, the innovation processes they follow, how they make decisions and allocate resources; where and how to partner in new and different ways across the broader ecosystem to support the broad base of skills these new approaches require; how regulation will evolve to support faster and more cost effective innovation that benefits patients and continues to ensure safe, effective and equitable care.   We truly are coming into a golden era for life sciences and the way that companies operate will change forever.    If you’re interested in learning more about our perspectives for the year ahead, please visit our website for our most recent Life Sciences insights: https://lnkd.in/eemdFxgS   #healthcare #health #lifesciences #healthequity #pharmaceuticals #JPM2024 #JPMorganHealthcare
