There's still much for me to learn, this is the first time I'm encountering the term "green hushing" which apparently refers to "the companies avoiding sharing their sustainability goals/actions with the public". This post says the reasoning behind this secrecy is to avoid greenwashing accusations. While the multilayeredness and complexity of the sustainability field may intimidate some, it's actually one of the aspects that excite me about working in this field! Sustainable practices are going to ensure we have a future, OF COURSE it's complex and huge! CASE STUDY | #HumanRights The #apparel and #fashion industry in general is aware of the scale of the social, societal and environmental issues at stake. Increasingly under scrutiny, several players have been moving swiftly to make commitments in an attempt to limit these risks – first in their direct activities, and then across their entire value chain. Ksapa worked with an American company renowned for its strong commitment to human rights, and more broadly for its management of #ESGrisks to innovate in the evaluation of its practices and the scope assessed across its entire value chain: from the harvesting of raw materials to customer use. This assessment was carried out at Group level, by evaluating the company’s risk management organization according to each scope and issue. “Pedaling toward transparency! 🌟 At the UNECE event ‘Vision and Visibility: Scaling Transparency’ on June 19, I had the pleasure of riding alongside Franzisca Markschläger [she/her] from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH. 🇩🇪🚲 Despite the vacation vibes, we were all business – discussing and sharing traceability and transparenty good practices and forging partnerships. 🌐 As a member of the advisory board of the #UNECE Sustainability Pledge, we contributed to the development of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) that measure traceability and transparency levels in the garment and foodwear sector. These KPIs are essential for driving real impact on the ground. 🌍 Companies and their global partners must prioritize traceability and transparency to identify, prevent, mitigate, and address environmental, social, and ethical risks throughout the entire value chain. I recently spoke to Nicolaj Reffstrup, co-founder of the innovative fashion brand Ganni A/S, about ambitious sustainability initiatives, ceaseless commitment in the face of failure and the recent release of The Ganni Playbook for my column The Impact Review. GANNI makes no claims to being a sustainable brand. And, for all intents and purposes, as a phenomenon that thrives on newness and is dependent on consumption and ever-morphing trend culture, it’s not. But GANNI is solution driven. Through ambitious initiatives such as successfully phasing out virgin leather by 2023, pledging to cut carbon emissions in half by 2027 in absolute terms (from a 2021 baseline), and the introduction of GANNI Lab and Fabrics of the Future, the B Corp certified label is setting precedent for the rest of the fashion industry. At times their dedication has necessitated great sacrifice, Nicolaj tells me. “We had two colourways of cowboy boots made from a material that we couldn’t find a better alternative for, so we ended up having to phase them out. They were worth 2.4 million DKK in sales.” “Often people ask: ’What does it cost?’ But it’s not just money, it’s sacrifice. This can include sustainability reports, third-party certifications, and direct responses to consumer inquiries. Engaging with the Community: Brands can extend their impact by engaging with communities and stakeholders in meaningful ways.
