🇰🇷 The Korean wave is flooding the Asian art scene 🚀 Beginning of this month #Seoul’s art scene bustled during the Seoul Art Week, with the return of a 2nd edition of Frieze Soul alongside the KIAF (Korea International Art Fair). In the past couple years, South #Korea appeared as an emerging art hub in Asia with a thriving local market. Its customer base is growing with the rise of #millennial and #genz young art collectors, looking at art as a new trending financial asset among stock and real estate. Seoul has also been drawing international galleries such as Perrotin, Pace, Lehmann Maupin, Vairous Small Fires, White Cube and Thaddaeus Ropac. The city and South Korea became a magnet for global dealers and galleries as it stands as a #freeport for transactions in art, with almost no transaction tax or import tax. Korean conglomerates and art institutions are also putting a lot of effort to maintain and develop a vibrant art scene with museums and local galleries like Gallery Hyundai, Kukje Gallery, Arario Gallery and Leeum Samsung Museum of Art. 👉 A strong #French-#Korean artistic bond : - The Centre Pompidou museum announced the upcoming opening of a new branch in collaboration with Hanwha Foundation of Culture in 2025. Centre Pompidou Hanwha will open at the art center of 63 building, an iconic skyscraper of the Seoulite landscape. - Lee Ufan, globally recognized South Korean artist, has opened a new museum in the city of Arles last year dedicated to a permanent exhibition of his artwork. 👉 Some key figures on contemporary art in South Korea : - South Korea’s art market reached 1 trillion won ($750.85 million) in revenue for the first time in 2022. - Art fairs experienced the largest growth of 59.8 percent from 188.9 billion won in 2021 to 302 billion won in 2022. - Total aggregate amount of fractional investments in art reached 100 billion KRW as of mid-2022. #Softpower #SeoulArtWeek #Kculture #ContemporaryArt #LeeUfan #CentrePompidou

Global Art & Culture Strategist | Expert in Fine Arts & Mediation | Bridging Europe, Africa & Asia Every morning, I triple-check art market headlines, stories, and sources for algorithms and bias
🇹🇼 Is Taipei’s strategy a model for future art markets, or a cautionary tale of overreach in the quest to capture global attention? Taiwan is asserting its position on the global art stage with Taipei Dangdai 2024. It might be a true cultural renaissance. n' Once a giant, now an underdog, Taipei's art scene thrives not in art galleries, but in the hands of its connoisseurs. Once a powerhouse overshadowed by Beijing and Hong Kong, Taipei is now a playground for affluent collectors and a beacon for cultural tourism. Yet, as it attracts global galleries and flaunts local heritage, Taipei Dangdai reveals the double-edged sword of rapid market expansion. Despite the allure, there are signs that the local contemporary art market is not yet self-sustaining—evidenced by a special section for artworks under $8,000 to entice local buyers. This move signals a deep-rooted challenge: growing a genuine art appreciation, support local the local scene with so many markets around in Asia now, versus expanding a speculative bubble. The fair's strategic blend of high culture and market dynamics reflects Taiwan's unique position, caught between cultural authenticity and economic ambition Considering this complex interplay, how did Taipei manage to recalibrate its position from a regional player to a central hub in the Asian art market? #TaipeiDangdai #ArtMarket #CulturalDynamics https://lnkd.in/g4TnqNMT

www.nineoclock.ro: “Connecting Worlds”, the new fine art exhibition proposed by WIN Gallery, is a tribute to the multitude of encounters between worlds and cultures, by Mioara Iofciulescu “Connecting Worlds” is centered around the process of acquiring knowledge, making discoveries and accommodating to novelty. It is a constant in our lives, equally beautiful and disquieting. We chose this subject because we are traversing a period when science is making extraordinary leaps, at once promising and challenging. Discovering inner and outer worlds entails an inquisitive spirit, the courage to delve into the unknown and the willingness to accept change as inevitable. To become aware of oneself and one’s surroundings, fascination and doubt must walk hand in hand, shaping the journey. Along this process, connections between people, cultures and mindsets flourish, enabling new ways of seeing and thinking. Introspection, rites of passage, symbols and travels are just a few among the many vehicles for exploration”, Irina Stoenescu, Chairlady of WIN Gallery, stated. Whispers of the Deep When I first set eyes on Bust K, it had just been hauled from the Indian Ocean. It bore chips, scratches, and graffiti. I listened with sadness to its story: once a part of an underwater coral exhibit, intended to revive dying reefs after nearby construction caused damage – but the exhibit failed due to rising water temperatures, and its sculptures were cast aside as trash. While many saw Bust K as worthless, I saw an untold narrative to be unveiled. Despite its fractures, I envisioned Bust K as a mermaid escaping the ocean's clutches, rising to the surface for air amidst the sweltering heat – a mirror of our planet's struggle, an urgent plea for survival against the ever-rising ocean temperatures. And so, with crystals, broken glass, silver foil, and bio-resin, 'Whispers of the Deep’ emerged as I embarked on the journey to restore Bust K to the beauty she was destined for. Art has always been my refuge, a way for me to express the thoughts and emotions that elude words. I wanted to transform this damaged bust into a symbol of sustainability, demonstrating that even in moments of destruction and despair, hope prevails. Through our creativity, we have the power to enact change. Every artwork sold by Peace of Art aids underprivileged children through Young Hearts of Singapore Red Cross granting them opportunities beyond their grasp, regardless of background or circumstance. xx Peace of Art In exhibition at Centrepoint till 14 April 2024

My extended fair report from #FriezeSeoul and #KiafSeoul is out on eazel inc. magazine. In the article, with a mind cleared from the immediate post-fair fuzziness, I point out some critical aspects that surfaced in this second joint edition of the fair, positing a couple of questions for the future of the Korean art market: Can South Korea, a relatively small yet wealthy nation, sustain this influx? How will the symbiotic relationship between Kiaf SEOUL and Frieze Seoul evolve? Will the nature of this relationship further influence the balancing of the local market? Having been an insider in the Korean art industry for over 3 years, I hope my reflections can help readers further understand the current state of the Korean art scene -- give it a read and let me know your thoughts! #artmarket #fairreport #friezeseoul #kiafsoul #koreanartmarket
