Moreover, with the small numbers of Black and Hispanic faculty at dental schools, it appeared that students are unable to see themselves in these roles. A.T. Still University-Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health (ATSU-MOSDOH), supported by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), has revised its predoctoral curriculum to address care of patients with medically complex conditions. The HRSA-funded project aims to address social determinants of health by adopting a transformative approach to predoctoral dental education. This project will entrench social determinants of health into dental training through interprofessional collaboration and integrated strategies/case studies. It is believed strong collaboration with primary care and community organizations, paired with efforts to diversify the oral health workforce, will help transform dental education and ensure the delivery of culturally responsive, team-based care to the nation’s most vulnerable populations. Women accounted for only 11% of dental school graduates in 1978, and now make up a growing percentage of the dental workforce! As of 2022: 🦷 Dental school graduates were more likely to be female than male. 🦷 97% of dental office managers are women 🦷 93% of dental assistants are female 🦷 Despite these growing numbers, female dentists earn less than their male counterparts and are less likely to own their own practice or to specialize. Here's to celebrating the incredible strides women have made in dentistry! The ADA Health Policy Institute recently released an analysis of practice transitions and career satisfaction among new dentists. This follows its updated data on practice size and dental service organization (DSO) affiliation for all practicing dentists in the U.S. at various career stages. Some of the key takeaways of this new analysis include: - When examining practice setting transitions over a five-year period, new dentists are most likely to remain within the same setting. Over a five-year period, only 10-15 percent of new dentists transition to solo practice. - In terms of career satisfaction, dentists have an overall preference for unaffiliated private practice where they might be working in groups but are not affiliated with a DSO. - Education debt levels do not vary by practice settings for new dentists, suggesting debt is not a major driver of career choice.  https://lnkd.in/gyjCkUyt

I am very proud to be named an author on my FIRST academic paper in the British Dental Journal! In this project, I worked as an Research Assistant to investigate the diversity in dental schools and explore what potential discrimination is present among dental academics based on their perceptions. The qualitative data was analyzed informed by a critical realist perspective and coded to identify trends. Key points ·        Many dental academics believe that career discrimination exists on the basis of race, gender, and other intersecting characteristics. ·        Even subtle differences, omissions, or microaggressions can have a significant impact on a career. ·        Individual mentorship and support appears to be important in helping dental academics to navigate the complexities of an academic career. It was an absolute honor and privilege to be part of such a skilled and genuinely amazing team. I would like to give thanks to Zoe Freeman our lead author and to Chris Penlington, Dr. Hawa Fathi, and Professor Paula for their crucial contributions. I have learned so much from this experience, including teamworking and the academic process of publication. Special thanks to British Dental Journal Portfolio for publishing our paper and Newcastle University for their oversight! I look forward to continuing research in a similar field and welcome to the challenge! I feel it is important that research like this is completed and given light. If we do not ask these questions and leave understanding to assumption, we will never know the full story and truly move forward. I hope papers like this will create a balanced understanding.
