𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐠𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐚𝐩𝐞𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐠𝐮𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐨𝐦𝐞 In a groundbreaking study conducted by scientists, the microbiomes of various great apes and humans with rural and urban lifestyles were compared. The largest study of its kind to date involved analyzing approximately 200 stool samples from wild African great apes and human subjects from different regions. The results confirmed the high host-specificity of microbiomes, indicating distinct compositions in chimpanzees, gorillas, and humans. Evolutionary parallels between host and microbiome, termed phylosymbiosis, were identified, emphasizing the close interaction over evolutionary time. The study also revealed the loss of evolutionarily conserved microorganisms in humans with urban lifestyles, particularly in the 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 bacteria group. The genetic analysis of 𝘗𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 highlighted a specific gene associated with oxygen sensitivity, possibly linking microbiome changes to disease risks, particularly in inflammatory bowel diseases. While causation requires further exploration, the study provides crucial insights into the impact of an urban lifestyle on the human microbiome and its potential implications for health and disease. A component of the human intestinal flora that has been little studied to date is the focus of a new study from Germany. Plasmids are small extrachromosomal genetic elements that frequently occur in bacterial cells and can influence microbial lifestyles—yet their diversity in natural habitats is poorly understoo An international team led by Prof. Dr. A. Murat Eren from the Helmholtz Institute for Functional Marine Biodiversity at the University of Oldenburg (HIFMB) reports in the journal Cell that a mysterious plasmid is one of the most numerous genetic elements in the human gut. This plasmid could potentially serve as a powerful biomarker for identifying health hazards such as fecal contamination of water or human disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease.
