🌍 Delivering culturally sensitive care in today's diverse world is more critical than ever. Healthcare professionals who work abroad often demonstrate heightened sensitivity and a more culturally adapted approach to care. My experiences working in various and diverse countries have highlighted the complex relation between culture and well-being. 🇬🇧 One memorable instance involved caring for a #Muslim patient while working in the #UnitedKingdom, where I learned firsthand about post-mortem rituals. Participating in the #ritual not only taught me the how but, more importantly, the why behind each step. It became evident that such cultural understanding was pivotal in aiding the family's acceptance of their loss and facilitating a healthy mourning process. 🇰🇪 Similarly, my time in Tigoni Level 4 Hospital in #Kenya revealed the lengths deprived communities go to honor their deceased. Witnessing families walk miles to provide a dignified #burial underscored the significant impact of addressing cultural needs beyond traditional healthcare boundaries. On one occasion, I personally arranged a taxi to transport a deceased individual back to their community. The expression on the family's faces made it clear that, in their eyes, this act was the most meaningful 'treatment' their loved one could receive. Unfortunately, I encountered a reality where patients often do not seek healthcare assistance due to the fear of being unable to return home for a dignified burial. ✨ These diverse encounters underscore the importance of embracing a person's background and belief system. Rather than making assumptions, a question-oriented, conversation-centered approach allows for more personalized care, considering potential cultural differences. Today, Immigration Canada (IRCC) announced new, enhanced caregiver pilots, to allow caregivers to continue to come to Canada, as programs are made permanent. The new pilot programs will provide home care workers with permanent residence (PR) on arrival in Canada. They will also be allowed to work for organizations that provide temporary or part-­time care for people who are semi-independent or recovering from an injury or illness. Through these new pilot programs, candidates interested in working in Canada’s home care sector will be eligible to apply if they meet the following criteria: 1️⃣ attain a minimum of level 4 based on the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 2️⃣ hold the equivalent of a Canadian high school diploma 3️⃣ have recent and relevant work experience 4️⃣ receive an offer for a full-time home care job In recent years, immigration programs for caregivers have been highly scrutinized, from incredibly long processing times, failure to address urgent care needs of vulnerable Canadians/PRs requiring care, and impractical restrictions on the caregivers and their Canadian employers. We know disabled people want to be more active. That’s why in our #manifesto we’re calling on the next government to make meaningful change. Our three asks: 1. Protect the benefits. Provide clearer understanding and wider safeguarding to reassure disabled people that being regularly active will not threaten their social security and other forms of government financial assistance. 2. Equip health and care workers. With NHS, ensure that better processes are in place for health and care workers to support disabled people to use physical activity in ways which work best for them. 3. Increase accessible outdoor spaces. Take a leading role in promoting and legislating design standards that ensure accessibility in local and national spaces. Disabled people deserve the right to move, play sport or be physically active however they choose to be.
