So many things to be proud of in this life... For me, one thing that I am proud of is being from the Caribbean 🌺 . As many Caribbean people will tell you, there is a unique sensibility about us, in the way we are able to navigate diverse settings. We are often known for great food, music and colourful displays of culture especially during our carnival seasons! However, when we work in foreign spaces, whether it be for academic or professional growth, we are met with some very common stereotypes and attitudes of marginalization...so much so, we end up compromising the exuberance we are collectively known for, to our detriment. With my lived experiences and my passion for the junction of things...I am excited to host a unique session for Caribbean immigrants and immigrants of colour..."Managing Your Identity in 5 Steps". Navigating the professional landscape as an immigrant of colour comes with its unique set of challenges. My travels enrich my legal acumen. While many may view it as a mere leisure activity, I have found that my travels have profoundly enriched my legal practice, particularly in the realm of cross-border negotiations and dealings with foreign clients. Immersing in different cultures through my journeys has allowed me to: • Intimately understand diverse work cultures, such as the nuanced differences in approaches, Communication styles and decision-making processes; • Navigate interactions better by bridging cultural gaps and fostering mutual understanding; • Observe and internalize subtle yet pivotal differences in conduct and societal norms that manifest in negotiations; The soft skills honed through travel are force multipliers, such as: • Instinctive appreciation for different perspectives • Ability to deftly adapt negotiation style • Comprehension of deeper stakeholder motivations • Cultivating fruitful cross-border partnerships For those in the legal profession, I'd embolden you to indulge your wanderlust. I truly believe that the horizon-expanding experiences will enrich you professionally in ways the classroom cannot replicate. Tell me - how many of you love to travel? And what insights have you gained from your travels? I’d love to know! #travel #lawyers #personal #learnings

🌍 My Personal Expat Experience 🌍 When I first arrived in the Netherlands, I was excited but nervous. I had taken Dutch language classes and had a Dutch boyfriend, so I thought I was somewhat prepared. Boy, was I wrong! Despite my efforts, most people couldn't understand what I was saying, and I often felt like the odd one out. Thankfully, my colleagues were kind enough to switch to English, but it was still a struggle. One of the most valuable pieces of advice I received was to be patient and perseverant. A friend told me, “Your Dutch will never sound native, but neither does the Queen’s!” (Fun fact: our queen here is Argentinian). This helped me relax and accept my accent as part of my identity. Through trial and error, I discovered strategies that helped me succeed and get promoted. I learned that trying is better than not trying at all—"Niet geschoten is altijd mis," as the Dutch say, which means not shooting is always a miss. I made an effort to blend in, never felt ashamed of my accent, and had patience with myself. Learning from others who were successful also made a huge difference. Today, I use these experiences to help other expats navigate their own journeys. If you’re struggling with language barriers or feeling out of place, remember that it’s all part of the adventure. Be patient, keep trying, and embrace your unique perspective. And if you want some help getting to grips with Dutch culture, come and join my workshop on Friday 31st May 🌟 #ExpatLife #CareerGrowth #DutchCulture
