𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗔𝗘𝗢𝗡 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗚𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗥𝗫  🤝🏻 Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) and its subsidiary, GSPARX Sdn Bhd, have joined forces with Aeon Co (M) Bhd to launch a transformative Solar Photovoltaic (PV) initiative whereby this partnership aim at advancing sustainability across Malaysia. The initiative will see the installation of solar facilities at all Aeon Malls and Aeon BiG outlets nationwide, marking a significant step towards reducing carbon footprints and promoting renewable energy adoption. This is upon fulfilling the Supply Agreement with Renewable Energy (SARE) that not only leads to long-term savings on electricity expenses along with improving brand reputation, but also establishes a benchmark for adopting renewable energy in the industry. Collaborations like these are crucial for propelling Malaysia towards a sustainable energy future. In addition to governmental green initiatives, the private sector is increasingly making its mark in fostering a greener nation. Gentari Hydrogen Sdn Bhd, in partnership with Asahi Kasei and JGC Holdings Corporation, has completed a feasibility study for an 8,000-tonne per year green hydrogen production project in Malaysia, supported by Japan's NEDO, aligning with regional decarbonization goals. DPS Resources Bhd, through its subsidiary DPS Energy Sdn Bhd, has entered a joint venture with Mutiara Mahajuta Sdn Bhd for a multi-faceted project in Alor Gajah, Melaka, emphasizing agro-tourism, renewable energy, and sustainability, contributing to the company's strategic land bank expansion. Tenaga Nasional Bhd's collaborations with Huawei Malaysia and RHB Banking Group underscore efforts to expedite the transition to sustainable energy in Malaysia, focusing on green energy solutions, digital transformation, and green financing for SMEs. Meanwhile, emphasizing the crucial role of ESG practices in national development, Datuk Mohd Zaid Zakaria, CEO of CIDB Malaysia, highlights the significance of sustainable construction outlined in the National Construction Policy 2030. Despite challenges, he affirms that ongoing initiatives like Net Energy Metering, the MyHIJAU program, and sustainable financing frameworks are essential for Malaysia's commitment to sustainable development in the construction sector. Other updates include the launching of the Johor Green Deal framework and the establishment of the Johor Sustainability Centre by the Johor Government during the Asia-Pacific Climate Week, focusing on five priority areas for green development. Baking a new cake Back in 2017, my team and I started a transformative journey that would change the Malaysian solar industry. Fueled by passion to explore new opportunities, we set out to develop a groundbreaking business model that would accelerate the adoption of solar power and revolutionize the way it is purchased. At that time, most solar plants (both rooftop and ground-mounted) operated under a Feed-in Tariff (FiT) model, which involved government setting a fixed price for solar developers to sell their energy back to the grid. However, we believed then that this model had limitations and unsustainable. Therefore, we sought for a more dynamic approach which we hoped would be commercially scalable. After extensive research and brainstorming, we came up with a daring concept (at least at the time it was), the willing buyer and willing seller model for solar power purchase. This concept aimed to allow consumers to directly purchase solar energy from solar developer at zero upfront cost to them as the off-taker. Through a solar power purchase agreement, the solar developer builds a rooftop PV system on the off-taker’s roof and sell the energy directly to them. To make it happen, we worked closely with the ministry, Suruhanjaya Tenaga, OEMs, installers and began forging partnerships with off-takers, the likes of Petronas Dagangan Berhad. I personally built acquaintances with awesome people along the way like my bro Mohamad Haikal Zubir who is now the COO of Gentari Mobility and my bro Huzaimi Omar the COO of chargEV. It was a long ride, but looking at how things evolved from then, it was worth it. Since then the business model is further commercialized by others like Gsparx and new #solarprojects sprouted up across the nation, creating jobs, reducing carbon emissions, and hopefully contributing to a clean and #sustainableenergy future. Why am i telling you all this? Many asked about my #RE dream team that i am building. And i would like to share with you my aspiration. We are not here to disrupt. We are not just merely building solar farms. We will build new sustainable, scalable green #businessmodels for others to benefit from. We will take the green energy business to greater heights. Done it before, inshaAllah will do it again. That being said, so the real question is, are you with me?

This week’s ESG updates include Bursa Malaysia Bhd, in partnership with the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) and the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET), has signed an MoU to create an inter-regional ecosystem centered on ESG principles. This collaboration aims to foster sustainable development in the ASEAN region by promoting ESG practices, including reducing carbon emissions and enhancing supply chain sustainability. Additionally, the ESG Association of Malaysia (ESGAM) and the National Tech Association of Malaysia (PIKOM) have formalized an MoU to promote ESG best practices in the Malaysian technology sector. Meanwhile, Siemens has joined forces with Progressture Power to promote Malaysia's green energy transition using digitalization technologies. The renewable energy industry sees continued growth as the largest renewable energy facility in Malaysia, situated at Bukit Tagar Enviro Park (BTEP) in Selangor, has officially started operating. This Waste to Energy (WtE) plant converts methane gas from solid waste into renewable energy, contributing 339 million kWh of electricity to the national grid and aligning with Malaysia's goal of reaching 40% renewable energy in power generation by 2035. Sunview Group Berhad, a Malaysian sustainable energy solutions provider, has become the tenth engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) partner of UOB Malaysia's U-Solar program. This partnership will offer solar power system installation and management services to local businesses and consumers. Malaysia is experiencing an upswing in investments directed towards sustainable waste management and renewable energy, as evidenced by YTL Power's recent joint venture for the Sultan Idris Shah Green Energy Plant, a waste-to-energy facility on a 245-acre site in Rawang, with a projected capacity of 58MW. Meanwhile, HSS Engineers Berhad's partners with a Consortium to develop 29.99 MW Solar PV Plant Kuala Muda, Kedah. Furthering this trend, TNB is set to make more aggressive investments in the national grid and renewable energy (RE) assets, highlighting the nation's commitment to a sustainable and resilient energy future. Through supportive policies, financial incentives, and international collaboration, Malaysia is making significant strides towards a greener and more sustainable future. Malaysia has been actively pursuing green energy initiatives to diversify its #energymix, #reducecarbonemissions, and promote #sustainabledevelopment. The country’s commitment to green energy is reflected in its policies, strategic plans, and ongoing projects. It was an interesting meeting with Malaysian Ambassador to India, Muzafar Shah Mustafa and Minister of Economic Affairs Shamilah Perumal. We have discussed extensively on green energy transition, opportunities especially on investments, incentives, and advantages being there. South East Asian countries are striving for excellence through #renewableenergy in order to build a #sustainable world for the next generation.
