Today is the IMO Day of the Seafarer, when we can all celebrate the vital contribution made every day by the men and women who serve at sea. There is no shipping industry without our seafarers, and their immense professionalism and commitment deserves to be recognised. The theme for this year is ‘your tips for safety at sea’ and our Loss Prevention team has shared their advice for all seafarers. 🤔 Safety is no accident. Always risk assess, never guess.  🚦Always be aware of and critically assess the environment you are working in.  👷🏽♀️ Safety is a state of mind - accidents are absence of mind.  🚨 Don't take shortcuts and follow the safe practices onboard.  📋Know your rights, including the right to stop work if you believe conditions are unsafe. 🧰 Always use the correct tool for the job.  🦺 Always wear the correct PPE for the job.  🤕Always make sure you are fit for duty.  🤒 Illness, lack of training and intoxication can increase risk of injury. ⛔️Never enter a space unless you are 100% sure it has a safe atmosphere.  🆙 Look up, risks are in all directions.  ✋ Stop the Job if you think there is a risk.  🥽 PPE is useless in your cabin.  🙋🏽♂️ If you are feeling low, seek help.  🗣️ Maintain effective communication with other crew members. Thats a great quote from General Secretary Arsenio Dominguez. Unfortunately as I have see recently designers, builders and company's don't agree. If they did seafarers would be involved in the initial risk assessment and concept design stage. The majority of the time seafarers get a bit of time before having a ship handed over to them but this is only for familarisation. There's no chance to make any changes for the safety issues that are now built into the vessel. If they are very lucky seafarers might get to make comments on some of the layout drawings, even then the design concept is done and major changes are not possible. As we move to fuels such as Ammonia which are novel from the point of being a fuel have been carried onboard ships for decades. There's a wealth of seafarer expereince about what a safe and operable system design is and what is dangereous and difficult to operate and maintain. Yet that expereince is being either ignored or under utilised. This will result in systems which at best increase complexity and crew workload and at worse add in risks that didn't need to be there and lack the required safety systems to mitigate them. Designers and shipyards involvement lasts only a few years and stops after a vessel is handed over. For seafarers our involvement lasts 20-35 years. While ease of design and build are important considerations, they must not override crew safety, ease of operation and ease of maintenance. It could save your life in a man-overboard situation. 𝟮. 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿: Before setting sail, check the weather forecast and stay updated. Being aware of potential storms can help you prepare and take necessary precautions. 𝟯. 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗩𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹: Regular maintenance can prevent mechanical failures and accidents at sea. Ensure that your vessel is in top condition before every voyage. 𝟰. 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗟𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘀: Fatigue can impair judgment and reaction time.
