Think of someone you know whose Instagram page looks amazing, but in REALITY, not so much. ✅Beautiful family. ✅Awesome vacation scenes. ✅Seemingly on-top-of-the-world success. It’s almost as if their “showreel” is an entirely different persona from what you know to be the REAL story. While all of us can think of someone who fits that description, 70% of the population can also attribute that scenario to their own life. It’s called “imposter syndrome.” One of the classic symptoms is this inner war between public perception & inner reality—thoughts of being “less than” or even a fraud. One of the “7 Weapons” I’ve found to be quite effective in silencing it is to drag it out of the shadows & expose it. It sounds masochistic, but instead, it is shockingly liberating—for you & others! How could one loveable Muppet go viral globally – by asking a simple question. Last week when Sesame Street’s favorite Muppet tweeted (x’ed?) “Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?”, the response received over 159K reactions and 20K replies, ranging from the comedic meme to some pretty dark replies. As a #mhfa the importance of checking in on your community isn’t lost on me – even when it is coming from a Muppet. With winter's shorter days and colder temperatures, it's common for many of us to experience shifts in mood and energy levels. That's why now, more than ever, it's essential to prioritize regular wellbeing check-ins, both for ourselves and those around us. Winter can exacerbate feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression for some individuals. By regularly checking in with ourselves and our loved ones, we can create a supportive network and provide assistance when needed. Do you ever feel like there’s so much noise you just can’t think straight?    Giggling. Noisy toys. Tablets, music, or video games.    Sometimes, it’s cute. And sometimes, it’s SO much noise and chaos that it feels like one more sound will push us over the edge.    It doesn’t feel good to become that overstimulated. And it often leaves us feeling guilty–as if we’re bad moms for not wanting to hear all the noise all the time.    But it isn’t our fault. Overstimulation is our body’s way of telling us, “Hey! There’s way too much going on!”    Every sound we hear sends our body a signal, and when there are too many signals, all telling us different things, our nervous system gets overwhelmed.    The bad news is that we can’t always shut out the noise. How do we know if we're taking our health to the extreme? When does a health kick become an obsession that can lead to harm? This article for The Times, raises valid concerns about the influence of social media on young men’s perceptions of their bodies, especially with the rising trend of achieving a muscular physique. Under the guise of health and discipline, we might see a path towards disordered eating and compulsive exercise; content creators, who often position themselves as an authority by sharing 'What I Eat' videos, may inadvertently be promoting unhealthy and restrictive relationships with food. Male body dysmorphia (BDD) is a modern epidemic, exacerbated by sophisticated algorithms designed to keep us endlessly scrolling. In 2021, a study found that 54% of men exhibited signs of body dysmorphia. Worryingly, hospital admissions for eating disorders among men and boys have surged by 128% in a 5 year period. Stereotypes surrounding BDD and eating disorders can mean that the signs and symptoms in men are overlooked, particularly because they may have a normal BMI and appear to be eating. This oversight means many men are unable to access the specialist support they need. This article serves as an important reminder to challenge our stereotypes about body dysmorphia and eating disorders, recognising the nuanced signs that may be present in young men and teenage boys. What might appear healthy on the outside could be someone pushing themselves to the brink physically and psychologically. I primarily use the LinkedIn platform to share valuable business/career information but feel this is an article worth sharing on a different topic.   Our children’s mental health is a real issue across our country, and we need to be aware of how they are being impacted by social media. Your first question may be, “But how can I affect thing” and I would say the following: ✔ Start at home and engage in conversations with your own kids to learn where they are challenged with anxiety, depression, fear, etc. (It takes more than one conversation but a continual pursuit of our kids) ✔ Be an example with your own social media – kids often learn from adults (they are watching a lot closer than we think). Parents/adult what example are we setting around our homes, in our communities, at restaurants when we are more focused on pictures of our food than the people with us? ✔ Engage in conversation with other adults to learn how they are seeking to help their kids. There is no great parenting handbook for the social media culture our kids are growing up in, but conversations with other parents can be a great place to refine ideas and strategies to help our kids. I share all this not from a perspective of having done things perfectly myself, but from the perspective of seeing teens in my community struggle with depression, anxiety, and unfortunately suicide. We can’t sit by and just watch!  

Instead of #smoking and substance abuse, focus on #healthy habits like #exercise, spending time with loved ones, pursuing hobbies, and seeking support if needed. Humor the screen invasion! For the last few years, our homes are been invaded - not by aliens, but by screens! In every corner, family members are glued to their devices, leaving little room for the good old-fashioned bonding. But hey, the problem is not the screens themselves. It is when we start overdoing it, going from casual users to screen zombies. You have heard the drill - too much screen time equals sleep issues, weight gain, mental health problems, and for kiddos, it can also mess with their social and brain development. Okay, okay, I am not exactly telling you anything new here. We all know how easy it is to lose an hour (or three) scrolling through mind-numbing videos or binge-watching the latest viral series. The content has been created to suck us in and keep us hooked. But hey, we are stronger than that! We can break free, switch off those screens, and invest time in our families and in improving our lives. Ready to take back control? Here is my secret weapon - humor! First, lock the tech for an impromptu comedy hour. Got a corny joke? Perfect! Embarrassing childhood stories? Even better! Laughter is the universal icebreaker, and it is sure to bring everyone together. Next, play with the kids, may it be dumb-charades or Pictionary or just a silly dance-off, the wackier, the better. Your family will be too busy having a blast to even think about their screens! If your family can survive such comedy hours, it is time for the next round. Try waking up your kids early on a weekend to go for a hike or for a run, cycle, or any outdoor activity. Leave your phones at home. We survived before the invention of mobiles, right? I bet we can manage for a few hours. The final round would be spending the whole weekend without screens. Might as well take your family to a remote place with no cell reception. Necessity is the mother of invention. Let it be the mother of getting unplugged this time! These unique interactions will teach us and future generations the simple pleasures of real-world fun. Happiness is contagious, folks. Remember, laughter is the key to balancing digital life with the real one. So go on, share a chuckle, make it a habit, and reclaim your family!
