For the past couple of days, I have consoled and supported my previous colleagues as they have “unclipped” for their last ride with Peloton. I feel a responsibility to advocate for some of the feelings that can’t be expressed due to the social customs and expectations of the saturated job market they face as they pursue their next opportunities. During the pandemic, Peloton exploded, and for anyone who was there, you remember how amazing the experience was. We grew so fast! I remember an all-hands meeting a team member described us as a “6-foot 5th grader trying to learn.” The pandemic tapered off, and manufacturing, logistics, and financial challenges soon arose. During this existential crisis, upper management became more concerned with self-preservation rather than navigating obstacles and making decisions that could mitigate loss. Barry Mcarthy once said, “Fast is as slow as we go.” I guess we weren’t fast enough. To all hiring managers: Understand that the individuals parting ways with Peloton who are applying to your posted position, they have endured change and stress to the degree that few others will experience in their entire careers. They have most likely been working a combination of 2 or more roles that went beyond the scope of their original job description. These are badass people that you should at least consider for an interview.

I saw that Peloton just hired its second CMO in the past year, and I was reminded of a 4-step cycle I've seen continually in my career: Step 1: A company rides a wave of growth created by some outside factor (a pandemic, a recession, etc.). Step 2: Then, instead of recognizing that the growth came from an outside factor, that company pats itself on the back and thinks it's done something really great. Step 3: It continues into the future as if it's really great and the wave of growth will never stop. Step 4: But then something entirely predictable happens: the growth stops. Imagine that. Wishing for a 2024 filled with measured expectations, realistic growth objectives, and fewer layoffs/turnover. #business #growth #startup

After 5.5 years of product and user research at Peloton, my ride has come to an end. 👋 Over the past few days, I have received a flurry of messages checking in on me and asking how I am feeling. Honestly, I do not feel sad. Perhaps, I have already pre-grieved like Roman Roy from Succession, but we all know how that turned out, so check in with me again in a few weeks. 😂 Instead, I am awestruck by how lucky I am to have met my brilliant and tenacious coworkers. How did we all end up at the same place at the same time and mutually agree on a mission bigger than ourselves?! I have witnessed them get married, survive a pandemic together, share hobbies & passions, travel the world, graduate, get promoted, break up with unworthy significant others, have babies, build confidence, buy homes, discover themselves, freeze their eggs, and move across the country, all while researching, designing, and creating a life-changing product. I cannot deny that the last few years at Peloton have been challenging. At times, it felt like we were so focused on metrics and stock prices that we forgot about the millions of real people we were impacting daily (I can say this, right? I can't get fired now!). Altruism was one of the main reasons that brought me to Peloton in the first place, and I am proud of the work we have accomplished, together. The magic of the last 5.5 years was undoubtedly my remarkable coworkers and the incredible Peloton MEMBERS (never users!). And now, I am excited to see what the future holds. Your boy is back on the market and looking for new opportunities: Peloton recently announced they are going through some financial adjustments and laid off over 400 employees. I’ve been impacted even as a contractor. It’s been an absolute pleasure and great opportunity working with incredible designers and engineers here. Here are some highlights of my time there: 📚Built a shareable component library for the web team with 20+ components bundled with hundreds of semantic tokens. 🕹️Built a token generator to output accessible code that Apple, Android and Web teams can use in their UI Kits. 🤖Developed custom GitHub actions for seamless token integration and updates so development chains are never broken. 📝Created a documentation site for design and engineering teams to reference anytime. I’ll gather some screenshots and share some snippets of what I’ve done.

Redeem rewards for things you actually want and love. Which is what I just did for a Peloton during Amazon prime days. I must say, it's pretty cool to use accumulated points earned from awards, birthdays, work anniversaries and recognition within the Bucketlist Rewards and Recognition platform. I also leveraged an internal perk we have here that provides us a budget for a Bucketlist Day, allowing us to use it towards anything on our own Bucketlist. THIS is the reason that Peloton hasn't ~completely~ failed... We all know Peloton has had some serious brand struggles. The company shares are dirt cheap. I haven't seen a positive headline about them in ages. And please let's not forget the unfortunate SATC cameo ft. Mr. Big. Tough. But they're still kicking. And here's why: Personal. Branding. As a Peloton user, the instructors are the only reason I keep coming back. Instructors have created their own communities and personal hashtags. Their personal brands create and grow the 'Peloton Community'. THEY are what makes the brand special. Now, who's to say how long the company can survive... But I fully believe that Peloton is still here because they allow employees to: ✨ Thrive and engage with the community in their own unique ways ✨ At the end of the day, people buy from people. Not brands. Am I crazy? Or is there something else keeping them afloat?
