This is a PRIME example of racism/double standards in the creator economy This creator went viral for discussing sexual acts during an interview Since then she been signed to UTA agency , starting a podcast, and NOW in rolling stone Why is this an issue? ➡️If a black woman had done the exact interview she would be labeled as ghetto or a hoe ➡️White creators blow up from mediocrity while black creators struggle to even get paid brand deals ➡️When black creators do get paid it’s significantly less than white creators Why don’t brands invest in black creators ? The rumor is that black creators aren’t marketable they don’t sell as much or aren’t as brand friendly as white creators Yet black creators are the ones creating the trends, challenges , etc…they set the TRENDS and garnishing brands/companies millions of dollars organically…. This is not to downplay this young lady BUT we can’t ignore these disparities if we want to see any type of change for black creators What are some ways we can improve this issue? ➡️Pay black creators fairly ➡️Include diverse roster of creators ( not just a token or lighter skinned creator ) ➡️Provide the same opportunities ➡️Create platforms for black voices
I don't understand why they are called "creators". It diminishes what traditional creatives do: create things that enhance our lives and solve problems. "Influencers" is a more appropriate term for these characters in my opinion.
Definitely wouldn’t want future potential romantic suitors or parents at my child’s school to see me as the ‘hawk tuah’ girl, whether I’m black or white(especially black). But I digress 🤷🏾♀️
Absolutely! It was so frustrating when the D'Amelio sisters went viral and got brand deals for a dance choreographed by a young Black lady. Unbelievable. Would have Jalaiah ever got that same blow-up??
Couldn’t agree more! This subject is being overlooked by a lot the creative economy professionals talking how much of a genius she is
It's sad to see because we're always degraded and underpaid when it comes to our talents. She blew up off this. The same thing happened to the young black girl who made up the renegade dance. Smh
Everything you said here. And let's take it a step further. Nara Smith, a Black woman with a white father is a very highly paid influencer and content creator, but she's more marketable because of colorism and the fact that she looks racially ambiguous. This isn't a knock against Nara and her hustle but rather the culture around all of this madness. I'm tired of it.
to drive the point home even further, the original longform video was created by two creators of color going around interviewing women, and women of color did provide content for them.... so the inequality finds itself in the original source material and is glaring
This is white privilege in a cocktail dress sipping on opportunities while talented Black creators are left parched at the bar.

1moAnother easy way to further support black creators is to engage with their content and provide CREDIT when repurposing Something so simple yet often overlooked! And if you use their material to sell anything make sure to pay them
