I was running my own fashion brand at 21 years old, and in the first year, I had everything: - The customers. - The press.  - The brand. - The success. ASOS was in talks with us to stock our clothes. I thought I had it sussed. I did not. In year two, I lost everything. - My business. - My home.  - My car.  - My relationship. Everything I had was ripped out from under my feet. I had to re-enter the workforce with a failed business and not much else on my resume and had to work my way from the bottom up - after being a Managing Director for 3 years. A humbling experience. But that failure is what allowed me to work for someone else for 10 years. That failure allowed me to make more mistakes and learn from them - on someone else's dime. That failure gave me the time, the skills and the confidence to launch my next venture, Klowt. That failure is why Klowt now succeeds. You, like I did, see failure as the opposite of success, it’s not. It’s part of it. Because there is no such thing as win or lose – there is only win or learn. “This fashion business is not for me,” Mary blurted out, shaking her head like she had just gotten a new revelation. “It's time I found something else to do. Maybe I should go back to my 9-5. Don't you think so?” She turned in my direction, gawking at me as I sat quietly in my single room, creating a new set of designs for a dress. Mary and I are business owners. But let’s say Mary is confused. About a year ago, we quit our office jobs to build our own business. We were so sure we would succeed in a year. Of course, we are not where we dreamed to be. I dreamed of getting a big complex and running a fashion store with many apprentices at my beck and call. Am I there now? Not anywhere close. But I didn't give up. Unlike me, Mary had tried three different businesses in one year but finally decided to partner with me. She thinks she is a failure even after how much she has tried. We all have our definition of success. As a business owner, yours could be when you finally expand and beat competitors. Business of Luxury Summit. Susanna Nicoletti always has a thought-provoking angle, Mathew Dixon, Harveen Gill, appear on my feed with news and updates. Over the weekend The Business of Fashion shared Imran Amed letter "The Fashion System is Creaking. Will it Collapse?" It's an interesting perspective so long as you can keep it at arm's distance! This type of conversation can be difficult to digest if your job doesn't feel secure or you're between roles. How can you use this information to craft a POV and inform your next steps?
