Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Transnational companies are responsible for a significant proportion of the production of advanced goods, investment in technological research and development and international trade. Despite playing an important role in the region’s exports and production of advanced consumer durables, they contribute little to job creation and can cause balance-of-payments problems in some countries, because of their profit remittances abroad. The region must shift the focus of FDI attraction policies towards sectors that contribute to structural change and reduce external sector pressures.

Trade and Industry (DTI) Secretary Alfredo E. Pascual affirmed the strong bilateral trade relations between the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during the bilateral trade meeting with the UAE officials held at the Shangri-La BGC on Friday, Nov. 24. Pascual said during a high-level ministerial delegation from the UAE led by Minister of State for Foreign Trade, Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, and Minister of State Ahmed bin Ali Al Sayegh where they discussed potential collaboration and partnership in priority sectors including clean energy, infrastructure and health care. “This meeting is a testament to our shared commitment of strengthening economic ties between our nations. On the part of the Philippines, we are encouraging UAE firms to explore the conducive business environment in the country as we envision to achieve mutual economic growth,” he said. The trade and industry chief highlighted the Philippines’ growing appeal as an investment destination and outlined broad opportunities for collaboration across various sectors to further strengthen economic and bilateral partnership between both countries. These numbers suggest a potential stabilization in China's growth, with other data indicating a global demand pickup. However, the property crisis and weak confidence continue to affect the Chinese economy. After years of negotiations and deferment, #Iraq’s #WorldTradeOrganization accession talks have been resumed and seems to have made good progress. Although, Iraq might be in for a long wait, joining WTO will help the country regulate it’s economic and trade policies, access to global market and reduction of trade barriers. The #WTO is made up of more than 160 members and covers 98 percent of world trade. It is the only global international organisation dealing with the rules of trade between nations.
