📢 With the August bulletin for Laos BIIA Member Worldbox Business Intelligence is introducing its new country risk report which is now including the ESG Score for Laos too ! 👉 ESG Score – 4/10 (Negative):  Laos is ranked 115 out of 166 in the 2023 Sustainable Development Report from Cambridge University Press with a score of 63.0. Environment - Laos suffers from various significant environmental problems, the most important of which are related to deforestation. Social – Laos scores very lowly in this area. Key areas of concern include freedom of speech, association, and assembly to name some. 𝗔𝗱𝗮𝗽𝘁 𝗼𝗿 𝗦𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿 Great to listen to a great panel of experts on #climatechange hosted by British International Investment yesterday in London. Africa and other emerging markets will bear the brunt of the impact of climate change as weather patterns disrupt livelihoods, cause crop failures and affect sustainable economic growth. The challenge is that there is a massive disconnect between the financing available and what is needed on the ground to drive #innovation and help alleviate the impact of climate change. Thanks Chirantan Patnaik for moderating a very interesting debate with Hossam Allam Jess Ayers Lori Kerr and Charissa Bosma Some key takeaways; 1. The subset of business models which are also impactful in pushing the adaptation agenda are few and far between at the moment. 2. Much more needs to be done to find ways of crowding in private investment and encouraging entrepreneurship in emerging markets in the climate space. 3. Insects are the future! Ok - maybe only for animal feed in most markets though amazingly well received in many West African countries as delicacies for human consumption. Whilst the topics covered seemed somewhat abstract in many ways, the impact on real lives and livelihoods became very apparent. For countries in Africa trying to grow and provide employment for their population, tackling these issues is paramount to ensuring future prosperity.

The World Economic Forum states $44 trillion, over half the global GDP, is from nature-dependent industries. Africa, home to 65% of the world's arable land, emphasizes the need for global financial initiatives to manage nature-related risks for the global economy. EU's CBAM Economic and Environmental Effects for Asian Subregions The recently released Asian Development Bank report underscores the urgent need for decarbonizing global value chains (GVCs) - a task of significant relevance in the face of the global climate crisis. It highlights the impact of initiatives such as the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) on Asian subregions and emphasizes the importance of broader carbon pricing to incentivize and nudge businesses towards reducing carbon intensity and adopting cleaner production methods. Importantly, this report calls for more robust global cooperation on carbon pricing, taking into account both environmental safeguards and the economic benefits of globalization. The continuation of weak and limited global effort is not an option if we intend to achieve a substantial reduction in global carbon emissions.
