Happy hiring story – From São Paulo to Munich. I was helping a VR scale up based in Munich hire a Senior Engine Programmer. Quite challenging research (tight budget + hard skillset required). Posted an advert on Discord, 1 interesting application. No LinkedIn, but +13 years of experience in UE, including VR projects. Uau. We had a chat, super nice guy and clearly qualified. Just one fact to discuss: he was based in São Paulo. I asked him how he felt about moving in Germany, surely a big life change. He likes Munich and has some relatives there, so up for it. “All right, sleep on it and if tomorrow you still feel that way, we can give it a shot” The day after: “Hey Mirko, let’s go for it, sounds exciting. If it works, you have to come in Munich and we will grab a pint together”. 3 weeks later ➜ offer accepted. He was super happy, but the journey just started. German bureaucracy for the visa can be, let’s say, “tricky”. We spent like 1 hour together on Maps trying to find an official translator 😂 Long story short, it wasn’t the easiest relocation ever, but it worked. At 48 years old, his life took an unexpected positive turn. Realizing that I have contributed makes me smile. Every day I read posts about layoffs, it's hard to bear. I think it might be helpful to share these kinds of stories, because they can happen. Don't give up. Your next adventure may be closer than you think. Maybe on the other side of the world 🌍 P.S: I haven’t meet him in Munich yet, but it should happen soon 🍻

⏭️ What’s Next for Hank? Like many tech leaders and ICs, I’m looking for my next big move. I’ve taken the summer to really reflect on my passion and what I could do next. Sadly, I’ve left behind some great colleagues, who taught me so much. Good thing is, I am holding onto one person, who’s been so helpful during the transition: Andrew Bosworth , Meta’s CTO (‘Boz”). Thankfully, due to his kindness, I can bounce ideas off of him. 😊 Boz best exemplifies Meta‘s culture: develop an informed opinion, have a bias towards action, and then iterate. Iterate. My time at Dropbox and then Meta has been inspirational, and rewarding. Let me share three (3) key principles re: best in class engineering and lean data infrastructure that I’ve learned: 1️⃣ #DataModernization is a key prerequisite to effective #ML initiatives. 🔹 A well thought out enterprise data #architecture program can speed ML timelines from years to months! 2️⃣ #DeveloperEffectiveness is a primary ingredient to high quality engineering and faster build/release velocity. 3️⃣ #EngineeringLeaders must be in the technical weeds *and visionary… at the same time! 🔹#CTOs/#CIOs/VPs I’ve spoken with wish the quality and speed of engineering efforts to be improved… and most of them see this type of leadership transformation as a driver. ⏭️ Ok, So What’s Next? If you're hiring a high caliber software engineer this week (or month), know that there are two kinds of top performers. Both of them: - consistently over-deliver - are incredibly fast - know their stuff But one hordes their expertise and the other shares it. One stands out while the other lifts up. One excels while the other helps a team excel. You're rarely looking for the first kind, but you hire it more often than not. Because your hiring questions and strategies don't make this distinction. As a result, you hire a sprinter who wants to win a 100 meter race, when what you needed was someone to run one leg of a relay race. Make sure you're hiring the person who knows they're playing a team sport!

3 things I've learned about building solid Technology teams. I'm a first time CTO, so definitely learning on the job. But these are 5 things I've learned from the last 5 years 1️⃣ Hiring is super important, and great developers can have choices, so think about how you can make your culture attractive to developers. We have a big focus on that 2️⃣ Keep doing your 1:1's any time I miss these you miss a lot of insights 3️⃣ A culture of shipping is super important, we have a Friday Wins meeting where we celebrate what we ship ever week.
