Where were you when the dotcom bubble burst? 💭 The chip industry is notoriously cyclical, and over ASML's 40 years, we've experienced our share of downturns. When the internet boom of the early 2000s ended, it triggered "the worst downturn in the history of the semiconductor industry", according to our then-CEO Doug Dunn. In 2001, ASML posted a loss as orders slumped, and we had to restructure. These challenging times tested and shaped us. Building on these experiences, we continue to evolve, ensuring our business and ecosystem remain resilient and prepared for both downturns and upturns. This is how we navigate the cycles of the chip industry, together with our customers, suppliers and partners.

SEMICONDUCTOR EQUIPMENT COMPANY ASML WILL OPEN BIG NEW OREGON WAREHOUSE NEXT YEAR ASML, a leading Dutch semiconductor equipment manufacturer, will expand its operations in North Plains, Oregon, with a new 210,000-square-foot warehouse. This move addresses the rising demand for advanced chip manufacturing tools from local customers. While this expansion signifies a significant investment in infrastructure, ASML has stated it will maintain its current workforce of 800 employees in Oregon. It's funny how complacent we get with the technology we talk about and use every day. I read an article on Bloomberg today https://lnkd.in/edVkFG_N which discussed the delivery of a new machine from ASML. It's got to be up there with the most complex machine ever built by humans....anyway....the machine was delivered last year, and won't be finally configured and pumping out product for Intel Corporation until 2025. The complexity and balance needed for this industry is genuinely mind-blowing. When your colleagues/supply chain start to complain about how capacity is constrained and "why can't we build more fabs/factories/foundries/plants etc" then remind them of this. Waiting for the next shortage cycle is NOT the time to start building machines! Also, while we are at it, where are all those STEM graduates we will need....?

The Midwest is quickly becoming the 'Silicon Heartland' as it continues to rapidly evolve with this recent announcement, https://lnkd.in/eR_hc2xW. The federal CHIPS & Science act has been the catalyst. This builds on some high-profile announcements including the Indiana Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons (SCMC) Hub, the Intel announcement in Columbus, Ohio and the Purdue/Ivy Tech partnership to build the next-generation microelectronics workforce. In each case, workforce and R&D are critical decision factors. Proximity matters. In the case of SK Hynix, proximity to Purdue University and the Purdue Research Foundation and with Intel Corporation, proximity to The Ohio State University. Workforce development also requires tight integration with the community college systems, with Ivy Tech Community College in Indiana and Columbus State Community College in Ohio playing key roles in workforce development. It's all about talent. Collectively, these represent great models of government, higher education and industry partnering together.
