"What kind of customer are you today?" 🤔 We bet you've never been asked this question before. Normally, when you visit a retail location, it's the other way round - they ask you how they did. 🔁 But Circle K, one of Sweden's largest retail chains, decided to flip the switch and draw attention to how customers interact with their frontline staff. 🚀 In late May, a pilot project kicked off at three gas stations in Stockholm, where established customer surveys were reversed. Now, it's the customers who will evaluate their own behavior on a feedback kiosk at the entrance. "What kind of customer are you today?" That's the question that will greet customers at these selected Circle K locations. The goal is to start a meaningful dialogue about the importance of treating service personnel with the respect they deserve. 💬 "As an employer with frontline staff across the country, this is an ongoing issue for us. We see a concerning trend in society with an increase in mistreatment of frontline staff. 🌟 Reflecting on Exceptional Customer Service 🌟 Can you imagine a world without face to face customer service? I started running shortly after my mother passed away and fell in love with it, especially running on my treadmill. Well, after many years of use, my treadmill finally broke for good after a great run. Knowing that choosing a new treadmill was going to be a difficult task, I did a bunch of research and even asked ChatGPT, but I still couldn't decide. I decided to go to the local DICK'S Sporting Goods store to do more research, to see and feel the treadmills, all the while knowing I probably still would not be able to make a decision. While looking at the treadmills, Maaria (not Maria), a team member, stopped and asked if I needed help. I initially said, "No," but she asked a simple question: "How can you decide with all these options?" I laughed, but from there we started a conversation about what was important to me. She not only described the specs of the machines but also some different perspectives I hadn't thought of. It's people like Maaria that make businesses successful - people who go the extra mile, show empathy, leadership, and curiosity. Customer discourse is happening in new ways in new channels all the time and jumping across channels. That disclosure is power that is forming and shaping brands today. For agencies, the key to serving brands is harnassing and fostering that discourse in new ways and bringing that back to the brands to better understand their customers.
