Congratulations Rebuilding Exchange! The work this grant supports is a critical step toward routine reuse: documenting carbon impact (which intuitively should be big…but how big?) of reusing existing materials. Will help designers, builders, and owners make informed decisions. And encourage manufacturers to build reverse logistics to preserve the value of what they have already made. Also, a great example of the R&D that will be vital to a future that is more circular.

The US EPA just announced a public input opportunity for a $100M #EcoLabel Program for Low Embodied Carbon Construction Materials, as part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda. The program aims to reduce climate pollution linked to the manufacturing of construction materials, which accounts for 11% of global #GreenhouseGasEmissions. The improved air quality resulting from this reduction aligns with President Biden’s environmental justice agenda. The label program will help define what constitutes “clean” construction materials in support of the Biden-Harris Administration’s Federal Buy Clean Initiative, which leverages the Federal Government’s purchasing power to spur demand for low-emissions #manufacturing . The program proposes to standardize and improve the data that manufacturers use in developing #EnvironmentalProductDeclarations (#EPDs) and create a central registry of #CertifiedProducts. #CarbonRATE, #GlobalGreenTag, #GreenBuilding, #LowCarbon, #lowcarbonfuture #lowcarboneconomy

I strongly support Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for their role in enhancing our understanding of the environmental impact of building materials. However, I’m concerned about the high costs associated with obtaining EPDs, which could limit their accessibility and hinder innovation, especially among smaller companies. Which is where innovation and growth historically comes from. Much like jazz and rock ‘n’ roll emerged outside traditional music institutions, significant innovations often originate from smaller, less established entities. It’s crucial that initiatives like the EPA’s new carbon emissions reporting program for construction materials remain inclusive, ensuring that all industry players can contribute to sustainable development and have access to markets.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released draft criteria for Product Category Rules (PCRs) in support of a new label for more climate-friendly construction materials and products as part of the $100 million Label Program for Low #embodiedcarbon Construction Materials created under the Inflation Reduction Act. PCRs are guidelines for developing Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which communicate climate and other environmental impacts of products, and will be used to determine a product’s eligibility for the new label. The draft criteria will improve PCRs by establishing consistent requirements for data quality and transparency in EPDs. Currently, the manufacturing of construction products and materials, such as concrete, asphalt, steel, and glass, accounts for approximately 11% of annual global greenhouse gas emissions. https://lnkd.in/eYQHdRPi
