Unsurprisingly I don't agree at all with the other two commentators quoted in the article from a PR point of view, but maybe the fact they're both of a certain demographic proves my point about how a lack of diversity can cause tunnel vision.
Anyone who has spent any time on Instagram or TikTok in the last few weeks can see the potential issue with that colour combo, crucially, with the black of the fireplace (which is what distinguishes it from Italy, Hungary and other red, white and green flags), particularly in association with the flames / destruction theme.
Of course we all understand that this campaign would have been designed months ago and the photos taken and signed off long before things escalated in Gaza, but final sense checks should have taken place before go live and our jobs as PR people and brand guardians is to try and foresee all possible worst case scenarios and avoid them where possible! It's not about whether we think the issue is valid or not, just that there's a risk of an issue.
Of course sometimes things do still slip through, but the key then is acting swiftly. As we so often see in crisis management, the initial issue can be exacerbated by a company responding badly or not at all. M&S would have avoided 90% of the heat they are feeling at the moment if they acted quicker. Even if you didn't anticipate the issue initially, responding to it ASAP as soon as it arises is the crucial plan B of crisis communications

Criticisms over brands ‘picking a side’ or staying silent on the Israel-Hamas war leave little room for communications blunders.
Let's understand and let's sink in, social platforms and your views can be free and you have all freedom, but that do not cover your rights to communicate anything anywhere about anyone.
So with caution, use it for a good reason!

Worth a listen. It doesn’t take a genius to see that Biden’s spending spree is only to serve two self-serving purposes:
1) buy votes to get him re-elected and
2) to try and write his name in the history books.
My take:
1) he has caused tremendous inflation on those he says he wants to help … low and middle class. They have less discretion on spending.
2) win or lose in 2024, he will go down in history as one if the worst Presidents in our history because of his poor economic policies, open/destructive border policy, and how he has treated the American citizens second versus first!
3) the American people are not going to be fooled as they were in 2020. Fewer sheep. He is going to lose.
