Safety is a way of life in the freight industry; it is ingrained in every aspect of operations – from the yard to CEO board tables. Strong safety is good for our employees and the communities and customers we serve. I am proud of our role to advocate for a regulatory framework that enables advancements in safety and progress.   In an article for Railway Age magazine, I discuss the railroads’ leadership in increasing safety measures through innovation and elevating safety standards beyond government expectations. "The safest way to move goods over land." That is rarely reflected in discussions about our nation's railroads, but facts back up that reality: "Data from the Federal Railroad Administration highlight significant safety improvements across the rail industry. The overall train accident rate in 2023 decreased 27% from 2000; the employee injury rate fell 50%; and grade crossing collision rate dropped 25%. Notably, railroads today boast lower employee injury rates than most over major industries, including trucking, airlines, agriculture, mining, manufacturing, construction and even grocery stores." The members of #ILRail put significant dollars, resources, and planning into ensuring our nation's railroads are tremendously safe. It is worth reminding both the public and policy makers that our industry is among the safest places to work, we are the safest way to move goods overland, and accident rates have dropped dramatically in the last quarter century. A new Rail Safety Bill has been introduced to House lawmakers. The Bipartisan Rail Safety Bill focuses on four key areas: strengthening rail safety requirements, improving train inspections, expanding continued support for first responders, and increase penalties on any wrongdoing made by rail companies. Lots of talk about rail safety in the past couple years, much of which is purposefully misleading. AAR has a new white paper showing across-the-board safety gains. H.R. 8996 builds upon other legislation before Congress to restore reliability, safety, and consistent service to our nation’s freight rail system. It’s critical that Congress finds consensus on these commonsense reforms to address ongoing operational challenges, enhance safety measures, and resolve the unacceptable disruptions and practices of Class I railroads. #TechyThursday: The Federal Railroad Administration and the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center conducted an analysis of safety culture growth across 20 short line railroads that completed both an initial and follow-up Safety Culture Assessment (SCA) by the Short Line Safety Institute (SLSI). The study showed continued support for safety culture growth through railroads addressing feedback in the SCA post-Assessment reports offered after each Assessment and by implementing SLSI-recommended opportunities for improvement.     You can read the research report showing that implementation of Opportunities for Improvement provided by the SLSI results in strengthened safety culture outcomes at short line railroads here: https://lnkd.in/gSCQf97Q
