Life is hard. Talking to your kids about cancer doesn’t have to be. We should be open, honest and transparent to mitigate uncertainty, which breeds fear. Keep in mind that these conversations will likely unfold over a period of time… kids, and adults, need time to process, digest, and ask questions. Kids deserve more credit than we give them for absorbing and being attune to their surroundings. I spoke with Angeline McCall at KUSA-TV, 9NEWS about how to approach these moments with intention. Feel it on the first!!!! Hey hey! Today is March 1, which means you are seeing my monthly PSA reminding you to check your body for lumps, bumps, dimples, or changes. Cancer is indiscriminate and doesn't care about your age, race, class, job, religion, family status, or anything else. Knowing your body and checking it monthly increases your likelihood of early detection, and early detection saves lives. In addition to monthly self-exams, keep your regular medical screening appointments, get your mammograms, and advocate for yourself. If you feel something isn't right, demand more testing and get second opinions. Sometimes, people are dismissed for being "too young" or "not typical" for certain types of cancer like breast cancer. Advocate for yourself; there is no such thing as being too young or not typical. And men, this is for you, too. Check your parts every month!
