Celebrating Juneteenth Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19th, marks the end of slavery in the United States. As I reflect on this significant day, I'm reminded of the journey towards freedom and the ongoing fight for true liberation. Here's how my family and I honor this day and extend its it's importance throughout the year: 1. Educational Legacy: We uphold my father-in-law's tradition of Juneteenth celebrations, emphasizing education over food. We ensure the next generation understands the importance of this holiday through storytelling and shared wisdom. I learned about Juneteenth not in a classroom, but from my Dean and father-in-law, highlighting the value of family education. 2. Challenging Norms: We continually challenge limiting ideas, habits, and beliefs that hinder our freedom. I believe in striving for abundance and not settling for less, inspired by my faith in a God of abundance. Challenging norms helps us create a more liberating and fulfilling environment. 3. Learning and Growth: We invite others on our journey of discovery, whether through visiting museums, reading, or studying. Embracing continuous learning helps us understand ourselves and the world better. Celebrating is important but we must do more and the more is a culmination of educating, challenging, and growing together (hope you enjoy my Juneteenth poem from last year Mosaic ERG program) 🌍✊🏿📚 #Juneteenth #Freedom #Education #ChallengeTheNorms #ContinuousLearning

Can you help the community around you while helping yourself? I was coaching someone today in the area of spontaneous speaking. During one of this person's spontaneous speeches she spoke of how her grandmother helped her learn and practice the concept of "ubuntu" while growing up. What is ubuntu, you may ask? Most of us probably relate the term ubuntu to the operating system. Ubuntu is a philosophy that "describes a set of closely related African-origin value systems that emphasize the interconnectedness of individuals with their surrounding societal and physical worlds. Ubuntu is sometimes translated as "I am because we are" (also "I am because you are"), or "humanity towards others" (Zulu umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu)." (source Wikipedia) The person I was working with mentioned that she learned from her grandma the importance of thinking of another when thinking of oneself. As a an example, her grandmother would ask her to pick up water from the well for the elderly woman next door when doing so for their household. This example really struck me. This person helped me realize that helping others can be done while helping yourself i.e. I pick up water for someone in need when I go to the well for my personal need. In our communities, whether at home and at work, we always have common needs or at least 1 common need. Imagine what our communities (at home or work) would be like if we helped others fulfill their needs as we fulfill our own. I think we would see: ➡ More supportive communities / environments ➡ Greater understanding between individuals ➡ Less people who feel alone ➡ Less people in need ➡ Stronger and safer communities / workplaces All we have to do is to think of others when we think of ourselves. How do you practice ubuntu at home or at work? If you would like to learn more about the concept of ubuntu, you may be interested in seeing this short explanation according to Nelson Mandela who is a wonderful example of leadership. https://lnkd.in/exAeax4G If you would like to join my network on LinkedIn, please feel free to send me an invite. I enjoy learning different perspectives from people like you. #leadership #ubunta #community #service

Be encouraged with fresh Biblical insights. An intimate relationship with God brings peace and purpose to our life today
<>Devotional<>Jesus lived, taught, and illustrated how each of us, yes absolutely everyone, can experience the same intimate fellowship with our Eternal Father. I address this further in my latest blog at https://lnkd.in/e4RE7KSJ. I welcome your thoughts.

🎉Happy Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month! Always such a wonderful month for expanding our knowledge and advocacy. Plus I love that this "month" is so unique by starting mid-September and going to mid-October. Some may be torn about having "months" or "weeks" or "days" to celebrate or honor certain groups, because we should be doing the work 365 days of the year. And that is absolutely true. This month is NOT the only time to celebrate and honor Latinx/Hispanic heritage. It is a time of intention and dedication to highlight Latinx/Hispanic heritage. Until our systems, practices, and beliefs value equity for historically and politically marginalized "others", these dedicated and intentional times of honoring are more important than ever, ¿no? What is your favorite part or activity to do this month with students, friends, or family? #LatinxHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritageMonth2023 #bilingualeducation #DualLanguage #DLBE #teachers #pocketprofe #kimkennedyphd
