It was an honour to represent Qld mental health consumers at the announcement of the National Mental Health Consumer Alliance by the Assistant Minister for Mental Health, Emma McBride. This is a significant milestone for mental health consumers in Australia, where the voice of consumers will be strengthened by national representation championing human rights, social justice and systemic change. Approximately 42.9% of Australians aged 16-85 experienced a mental disorder in their lifetime (ABS 2022). This equates to roughly 11.8 million people. As a consumer, it is so important that our healthcare environment empowers you to make your own choices and take control of your own recovery. The evidence shows fostering autonomy and shared decision-making in mental health therapy leads to improved outcomes. Consumer autonomy and respect for consumer control over care and recovery processes is essential across our health ecosystem at all times. I know from my own experience as a consumer, carer and working in mental health service delivery that you are the master of your own recovery. The National Mental Health Consumer Alliance works hard advocating for your right to consumer-led mental healthcare delivery to ensure people with lived experience have a strong voice in shaping mental health services. Become a member of your state consumer peak organisation to be heard and become involved in shared growth and learning opportunities that help contribute to positive change.
